Our Oman adventure holidays & tours

With infinitesimal desert dunes, sandstone forts that segue seamlessly into surrounding sands, wadis filled with turquoise water that feel like magical sanctuaries, and three seas to choose from for coastal escapism, our Oman adventure holidays are about extremes. Think desert camping, walking in wadis and diving to see turtles and dolphins, all with a backdrop of Muscat and mountains. It’s a whirlwind of wonders. These adventures might be extreme in scope, but that doesn’t mean they’re just for the hardcore. We have accessible adventures, plus adventures for all the family. And with a focus on locally-run hotels, and interactions with conservation projects for everything from turtles to oryx, these adventures strive to be extremely responsible, too.

Highlights of our Oman adventure holidays

Exploring deserts and dunes

One of the highlights of our Oman adventure holidays is that there are many opportunities for wild camping in the country: a fantastic, low-impact way to see its wildest places. Many of these experiences take place in the deserts and the dunes for which the land is famous. That means heading to Wahiba Sands, the sugar dunes, or even into the Empty Quarter itself – the world’s largest sand desert, into which the most adventurous can venture by 4x4 before stopping to wild camp under the stars. Other adventurous activities on the dunes might include camel trekking, visiting a wild oryx sanctuary, or stopping at a Bedouin camp for a traditional barbecue, plus cosy campfire, and conversation.

Into the mountains

Oman’s highest peak, Jebel Shams, is surrounded by natural wonder. There’s ‘the Grand Canyon of Oman’ – the country’s largest canyon – plus the famous ‘balcony walk’ which gives you dramatic views of your rocky surrounds. In this area you can discover the abandoned mud village of Al Hamra, historic oasis towns and Jabreen Castle – plus the city of Nizwa, where you can purchase fantastic local products from stalls and shops, or even a cow at the cattle market. On our cycling and trekking holidays, you can enjoy moderate and challenging adventures that take in some of Oman’s heights, staying in luxury eco lodge accommodation along the way, and supported by a specialist local guide.

Islands and beaches

When it comes to exploring Oman’s coast you can choose between the Arabian Sea, Gulf of Oman and Persian Gulf, and there are many ways to enjoy its beaches and islands. A sunset sail on a dhow off the shore from Muscat gives you an alternative, and amazing, view of the city, or you can enjoy the sea breeze as you sway on top of a camel on a ride along coastal dunes. In the north of the country you’ll find that Oman even has fjords – at the dramatic Musandam peninsula. If you can, rise early in the morning to see baby turtles taking their tentative first steps towards the sea: Ras Al Jinz turtle reserve protects thousands of endangered green turtles, and your visit can help support the ongoing success of the project.

The combination of varied geography (coats, mountains, deserts), welcoming culture, history, and the views. Excellent. When our flight from Khasab to Muscat was cancelled at the last minute (the incoming flight had to return to Muscat), we were initially left stranded at Khasab airport with nowhere to stay, and the prospect of our plans for Muscat being impacted. The local operator tried to be helpful, but when I called host company and left a message (on Saturday afternoon), Jim [the founder/owner]...read more
