1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?

The classical era sites were spectacular.

2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?

Don't expect to find any English or French language publications in the country to help give you context and background. Do as we did and spend as much time as possible researching before you leave. Our guide new his stuff but English was not his strong suit, the commentary got weaker as the 8 days passed. Don't expect much quality local food (in fact this was our biggest negative), country is full of great fruit and veg but this is not translated into tasty dishes in 4 & 5 star hotels. The only honourable exception was breakfast at the Sofitel Algiers which had high quality pasties and the only fresh orange juice we encountered during the trip. Expect lots of trash - broken bottles/cans/plastic plastic plastic. Locals use the sites as leisure facilities and leave all their rubbish behind. Without exception. Pristine beaches with a ring of discarded plastic around them, puzzled us all the time. But the people were lovely, happy to see (non=French) visitors.

3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?

Not at all

4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?

Overall sites were fantastic, marred by hotels with sloppy service and generally poor food. Three star rating is based on 5 stars for the experience of the sites /
museums let down by a country that is not ready yet for any level of increased tourism. Really happy we did this trip.

Responsible Travel

As the pioneers of responsible tourism, we've screened this (and every) holiday so that you can travel knowing we've worked to maximise the benefits of your holiday to local people and places, and minimise any negative impacts.

Planet

On this tour we visit several towns and places that are listed as UNESCO World Heritage Sites as well as protected reserves and areas such as the remarkable site of Tipasa and Constantine, one of the oldest town in the world. Our visits to these places help to support local projects to conserve the area's cultural and geographical heritage.

Our driver/guides will brief travellers on appropriate behaviour, both cultural and environmental.

Where appropriate and feasible we will always incorporate walking tours of cities rather than being reliant on private transportation - not only reducing our carbon footprint but we believe leading to a more enjoyable and intimate experience for our clients. Furthermore, all vehicles used on the tour have low carbon emissions. We work closely with our local suppliers to highlight best practice in terms of environmental issues.

This being a private and tailormade tour, it has much less impact when travelling through rural areas, reducing our environmental and social affects. Travellers are free to choose how long they get to experience in each region and where to go next.

Finally to emphasis our commitment to Responsible Tourism all clients will receive a copy of our Travellers Code of Conduct with their travel documents.

People

We employ local guides and drivers from Algiers, providing employment and income. Our leaders and local guides will carefully explain the customs and cultures of the communities visited to ensure that our travellers are able to behave sensitively towards fragile communities, and help them gain from tourism while not being affected by some of its more negative aspects. By visiting these communities, many of whom live outside the cash based economy, you are able to contribute to their ability to trade with mainstream society and gain some of the associated benefits.

Our philosophy is to only use small and locally owned suppliers, meaning that the income remains within the country and creates a real economic contribution. We also feel that the passion inherent within such suppliers means that your experience will be enhanced. We also try to engage with our suppliers on an equal basis – getting the lowest possible price usually isn’t the best outcome for local communities and is ultimately unsustainable. We aim to always treat our suppliers fairly and with respect; they are after all part of the key to our success and to us working together is much more than just a business arrangement, but an ongoing relationship that we aim to ensure truly benefits everyone involved.

We only work with operators who are as committed as we are to putting something back into the communities we visit. This may include giving a percentage of the profits from each tour to a foundation to help street children or local conservation projects. Furthermore, in order to allow our clients to make an informed decision on where a greater proportion of their money should be spent, we avoid including pre-paid full board meals where possible. Local restaurants and cafes then benefit.

Wherever possible, throughout this private tour to Algeria, we use locally owned accommodation. This means your money stays in the area to benefit the local community. When possible we use local transport, and we always use local restaurants, markets and shops. In doing this your travels are supporting and encouraging the development of local services.
