Responsible Travel
As the pioneers of responsible tourism, we've screened this (and every) holiday so that you can travel knowing we've worked to maximise the benefits of your holiday to local people and places, and minimise any negative impacts.
Planet
ENVIRONMENTAL ACTIONS ON THE ISLANDThe Azores stand out as an exemplary sustainable destination, offering a diverse range of leisure activities that respect the environment. Recently, the archipelago received the highest sustainability rating from the Global Sustainable Tourism Review by Green Destinations, an international initiative dedicated to assessing and enhancing the sustainability profiles of various locations and regions.
By promoting our hiking tours in São Miguel, we align our outdoor adventures with environmentally responsible practices, providing a sustainable alternative within the tourism sector. Hiking allows visitors to immerse themselves in the island's natural beauty without contributing to pollution, resulting in a negligible carbon footprint during their stay in the Azores.
RESOURCE CONSERVATION
Water is one of the planet's most essential resources, and even in areas where it is abundant, treatment and wastewater management require energy. Overconsumption can lead to groundwater depletion and pollution.
To address these challenges, we encourage our guests and guides to adopt eco-conscious practices such as washing dishes in a basin instead of letting the tap run, disposing of contaminated water at least 30 meters (100 feet) away from any water source, using only biodegradable soap for hiking activities and avoiding its use near lakes or rivers, and never discarding oily or food-contaminated water into waterways. We also promote the use of reusable water bottles to minimize plastic waste, which can severely impact remote environments.
PROTECTION OF LOCAL FLORA AND FAUNA
We emphasize the importance of respecting and protecting local flora and fauna. Guests are urged to refrain from feeding animals, as introducing unfamiliar foods can harm their health and lead to dependency on human food sources. Avoid disturbing wildlife for photographs, as this can induce stress in animals. Additionally, we advise against handling animals to prevent harm and danger, and we discourage collecting flowers or leaves to preserve the natural ecosystem.
People
SUPPORT FOR LOCAL ECONOMIESWe are acutely aware of the social and environmental implications of our activities and consistently strive to implement sustainable and innovative solutions that foster a positive impact.
Our sustainability initiatives focus on supporting local economies while minimizing the social footprint of our operations. By collaborating with local guides, we ensure respectful engagement with the unique traditions and cultures of the Azores. Our itineraries are thoughtfully designed to include visits to towns, museums, and restaurants, with guides who actively promote support for local businesses and artisans, enriching the travel experience.
PARTNERSHIPS AND SOCIAL IMPACT
In our commitment to sustainability, we prioritize direct bookings with local accommodations, showcasing the most authentic experiences the Azores has to offer in the most eco-friendly manner. Our local partners share our dedication to uplifting the community.
Recognizing the significant environmental and social repercussions of mass tourism, we consciously choose to operate with small groups, ensuring a more meaningful and responsible travel experience. This approach not only benefits local economies but also fosters deeper connections between travelers and the communities they visit, promoting tourism that values respect and reciprocity.
