Description of Danube Delta birdwatching tour, Romania

The Danube Delta is among the largest wetlands in the world, and on this thrilling birdwatching tour you’ll spend several days exploring the region by boat, with an expert local guide at your side, enabling you to enjoy a wealth of sightings.

The delta is one is one of the planet’s most renowned destinations for birdwatching, particularly waterfowl, with over 330 registered species and around 170 known to breed here. Particularly notable species include great white and Dalmatian pelicans, tufted ducks, purple herons, red-crested pochards and mute swans. This Danube Delta birdwatching tour is bespoke, so you can travel at a time that suits you, but April to September are definitely the best months to explore this remarkable area.

Alongside the birdlife there are many mammals from otters to hares and wild cats, and prolific fish species. The enormous biodiversity here across multiple ecosystems makes this an incredibly important region for conservationists. You can visit the Carasuhat area, formerly agricultural land that has now been intentionally flooded to create a place for birds to breed and rest safely.

You’ll have a convenient base in a comfortable, family-run guesthouse with the boat kept just moments away for easy excursions. Hearty, homecooked meals are included, and you can enjoy a few glasses of Romanian wine with your guide every evening as you plan the following day’s itinerary.

Holiday information

Low carbon:
Guests stay with us in our local, family run guesthouse and the traditional fish based meals served are very local, with lots of the fruit and veg coming directly from our own garden. Our water is also partly heated from our solar panels, which we are in the process of expanding. We can also help guests plan their train travel from the UK, which normally involves a change in Paris and then in either Germany or Switzerland before reaching Romania. Once guests reach Tulcea City from Bucharest we pick you up by car.

My overall experience exceeded my expectations beyond belief. The hospitality of Andrei and Irina was faultless. The accommodation was clean, spacious and with good facilities. But most importantly, Andrei showed us his precious Danube Delta with its fascinating wild life. Read full review

Responsible Travel

As the pioneers of responsible tourism, we've screened this (and every) holiday so that you can travel knowing we've worked to maximise the benefits of your holiday to local people and places, and minimise any negative impacts.

Planet

WILDLIFE
In 1991 the Danube Delta was listed as a World Heritage Site. Our comunity started a project in the Area: Carasuhat - an ecological reconstruction area, more than 900 ha have been rendered to nature. It is the youngest land of the Danube Delta, which, in ten years time, will become an entire independent ecosistem. This project can help us understand that sometimes human intervention hurts the nature. The project was started in 2016 and is already filled with birds, fish and vegetation - it's a Paradise.

Our promise is to promote and protect this area, to treat it as a delta incubator.

During our trips you will see many flowers. Please admire them and let them where they belong, in the nature.

WASTE
We reccommend reusable water bottles - our water is treated and drinkable so no need to buy plastic bottles. Please leave all the garbage in the boat, we will take care of it.

WATER
During your stay please make sure the water in your bathroom is turned off as you leave the room. The same goes for the air conditioning system, the lights and the TV.

ENERGY
Our water is partly heated by solar pannels. Hot water will be available during your entire stay, but as you well know it is better to heat the water with solar energy than with others non-renewable resources, which happens when it is used excessively.

LOCAL PRODUCTS
We use vegetables from our garden. When we can't cover the needs, our neighbours are nice enough to help us. You will feel the real taste of fruits and vegetables.

OUR TEAM
We are a small family business and besides me and my wife, we have the best cook in the village (try the fish cream soup and you will understand what I'm talking about). In 2018 she become a qualified cook after we sustained her to support the cook's course. But I asure you that nobody can teach you to cook as our granny did.

During summer you will meet one or two students from our highschool. They are those who are interested to develop a career in tourism. We help them to develop a career in the RESPONSIBLE tourism industry. We will offer them an contract after they finish the school.

LOCAL CRAFT
We take you to see local crafts. Maybe one of the pictures painted by local artists will become a memory that you take home.
