Expect extraordinary history, Creole culture and tropical, volcanic landscapes for wandering and wondering.
Responsible Travel was built out of a love of solo travel, and we want to share the joy of it with you.
Responsible Travel
As the pioneers of responsible tourism, we've screened this (and every) holiday so that you can travel knowing we've worked to maximise the benefits of your holiday to local people and places, and minimise any negative impacts.
Planet
Carbon ReductionWhen exploring villages and mountain ranges, we choose to walk rather than drive whenever possible. During our visit to the neighbouring island of Santo Antão, we choose to travel by ferry instead of flying, which helps keep our carbon footprint down. Food is locally sourced and vegetarian options are mostly available throughout.
Environment and Wildlife
Most of the time on this tour is spent in cities and villages, but we do spend parts of the trip exploring the mountain regions of Cape Verde. When exploring these areas on foot we take care to stick to the trails (where they exist!) and not to damage any of the flora, as some parts of the region are quite a fragile environment.
We make sure we leave nothing behind and have a strict no litter policy. We always make sure to take all litter with us, disposing of it responsibly when we reach big cities and towns and we don't leave cigarette butts either. Likewise, if we see any rubbish, we pick it up when possible.
People
Local EconomyWe work with a local partner who is deeply committed to preserving the country’s culture and heritage through community-based tourism, generating income for local communities. We visit fishing villages and local markets and are privileged to witness their unique way of life and efforts to provide for their families. By participating in these tours, we also contribute to the local economy.
Employment, Inclusivity and Diversity
On all of our tours we strive to include a strong focus on local communities and we are firm believers that tourism should have a positive impact on the places visited. On this tour, we aim to give our travellers a genuine insight into the traditional customs of the country. Some examples include visiting traditional villages, experiencing the traditions of rural Cape Verde, exploring local markets, and visiting the UNESCO-listed site of Cidade Velha. This approach not only provides a great experience for our travellers but also supports small-scale community-based tourism projects, often overlooked by mainstream tourism.
