Our South Africa cycling holidays

Our South Africa cycling holidays explore the verdant vineyards and coastal panoramas of the Western Cape, and the mountains and national parks to the east. Classic cycling tours include sections of the idyllic Garden Route, the Whale Coast from Hermanus to Gordon’s Bay, and the wine estates of Stellenbosch. There are opportunities to ride highlights of famed road races, to spend days relaxing by the beach, or to swap the saddle for the safari jeep. And throughout, you’ll stay in welcoming, locally run hotels and guest houses, with recommendations of places to fuel up, where you can sample the finest seasonal cuisine from brilliant local producers.

WHAT DOES CYCLING IN SOUTH AFRICA ENTAIL?

How fit do I need to be?

You will want a decent level of fitness for one of our South Africa cycling holidays, although the pace is easygoing, allowing you to chat with companions or just enjoy the views. Not all trips involve being in the saddle every day: stroll around the rock formations in Blyde River Canyon Nature Reserve; swim in the Tugela River cascades at Royal Natal National Park; or indulge in a beer or two at the Birkenhead brewery or a Sauvignon at Stellenbosch.

Although average daily distances won’t top the 55km mark, you'll make the most of the gorgeous views by keeping to an easy pace.

Tailor made or small group tours?

On our small group cycling tours in South Africa, the groups normally have a maximum of 16 cyclists (average is about 12) which allows access to small, privately owned guest houses, permanent campsites or safari lodges, with meals provided. There will also be plenty of opportunities to visit local markets and roadside cafes, especially around the Cape Peninsula, Hermanus and Betty’s Bay.

Throughout the tour you’ll be accompanied by a group leader and a backup vehicle, which will also carry your kit. Guided groups are great for solo travellers as they provide security in numbers and reassure you that directions, accommodation and trustworthy recommendations are all in hand. Single room supplements are also available, where possible. There will be a certain amount of camaraderie and socialising, especially in the evening, so bear this in mind if you prefer your own company.

Tailor made cycling holidays, on the other hand, are typically self guided. With no set itinerary to follow other than getting from A to B each day, you’re free to take detours as you please, or have an extra drink after lunch without keeping a group waiting for you. Full support is provided, including GPS devices, detailed maps and route notes, and luggage transfers.
Point-to-point riding or centre-based?

Most of our cycling trips in South Africa are point-to-point, so you will be staying somewhere different most nights, with your luggage transferred ahead of you. Cycling point-to-point is a great way to see a lot of this beautiful country, for example by travelling the length of the Garden Route, and it makes your trip feel like something of an adventure.

If you would prefer to settle in just one or two places, however, and not have to bother packing and unpacking constantly, then a centre-based trip may appeal more. The other advantage to this kind of holiday is that, should you wake up one morning and not feel like heading out on the bike, you can simply have a day off.

Are electric bikes available?

Many of our South Africa cycling holidays will offer the option to use an electric bike.

E-bikes have become immensely popular given they take much of the effort out of cycling while leaving all of the enjoyment. They’re especially useful if you don’t want to put too much strain on your joints, but also don’t want to be limited in where you can go. Please note that electric bikes may be subject to availability and a small supplement, so be sure to mention your preference when making an enquiry.
