Our cycling in Albania holidays
Our Albania cycling holidays promise some of the most rewarding routes, and sensational scenery, in all of the Balkans. You’ll sail through steep mountain passes where eagles soar in the Accursed Alps, pedal along tranquil lakesides where you’ll be pleased you packed a swimsuit in your pannier, and bury your feet in the sand along the glorious Albanian Riviera. You can opt for accompanied small group tours, or tailor made, self guided routes where you have a greater degree of flexibility in your routes and travel dates. Either way, you’ll stay in a succession of welcoming, locally run hotels and guest houses throughout, visiting and spending money in areas of Albania that still see very few international tourists.

What do Albania cycling holidays involve?
How fit do I need to be for Albania cycling holidays?
You need a good degree of fitness for our Albania cycling holidays, as daily distances can be up to 70km, sometimes tackling quite challenging gradients. These trips are definitely best suited to those looking for a bit of challenge – Albania is not a flat country! Any cycling holiday in Albania is going to include mountains, but the good thing is that there's always a blissful downhill to look forward to – what goes up, must come down, after all. A support vehicle follows along behind to transfer your luggage and offer a lift, if needed.
Tailor made or small group tours?
Our small group cycling holidays in Albania are ideal for solo riders. Cycling as part of a group encourages camaraderie at a conversational pace and is a great way to socialise when saddles have been safely stowed. Our trips employ local cycling guides who know the roads very well which allows you to relax and enjoy the ride rather than having to think about what’s waiting around the next bend. And our holiday partners have developed longstanding relationships with guest house owners and local restaurants who can comfortably accommodate groups, so that the sight of a pack of cyclists making their way into a rural community is a very welcome one.
If you are thinking of joining a group as a single cyclist then you certainly won’t be alone. You also might have the chance to pay a supplement for your own bedroom, depending on the size of accommodation, or you can bunk into a twin room with another member of the group of the same sex. These trips provide valuable employment for local people in northern, mountainous Albania, where there is much less tourism than there is further south on the coast. The guides on our small group Albania cycling holidays are the best people to tell you about the landscapes and the culture of the places you’ll visit.
On our self guided cycling tours in Albania, the freedom that you experience on a bike is coupled with maps, detailed route notes and luggage transfers between locally owned guest houses. You can of course rely on 24-hour support should you need it, but you will also have the confidence of being directed by people with years of local knowledge. With self guided holidays you can also decide on the difficulty of the terrain although bear in mind, Albania is 70 percent mountains so there will be plenty of ups and downs, even if you’re just sticking to the coast.
Point to point riding or centre based?
Most of our cycling holidays in Albania are point-to-point, where you’ll be staying in a different place every night, with your luggage transferred ahead of you for ease so that you need only cycle with a daypack. This kind of holiday allows you to see more of the country, or more of the wider Balkan region, if you opt for a multi-country tour perhaps also including Montenegro, Kosovo or North Macedonia. Centre-based cycling holidays are not common in Albania but we may be able to arrange this for you on a tailor made basis if you would prefer to focus on just one area.
Are electric bikes available on Albania cycling holidays?
Electric bikes (e-bikes) can often be hired on our Albania cycling holidays as long as you request that option in advance, as they may be subject to availability. If you’re new to riding an e-bike, think of it as just having a hand at your back giving you an extra bit of oomph on uphill sections. Battery charging options may be sporadic in rural areas (a charge should last at least one full day) so support vans will likely carry spares where necessary.
