Our Montenegro cycling holidays

Our Montenegro cycling holidays are the best way to explore this beautiful country. Dramatic coastal routes are punctuated with swimming coves and clifftop panoramas, and you can also cycle around the shoreline of Lake Skadar, the largest in the Balkans. For those looking for more challenge, there is the option of small group tours, led by brilliant local guides, that take in several different Balkan countries. Or you can leave behind the crowded coast and head up, up, up into Montenegro’s mountainous national parks. Your legs will have a few stories to tell when you get back, but oh, those views.

What does cycling in Montenegro entail?

How fit do I need to be?

Most of our cycling holidays in Montenegro will involve at least a few climbs, and these can be steep in places, so you will want a decent degree of fitness. Regular cyclists who love the challenge that mountains present should find Montenegro exhilarating. Passing through remote farming communities, our holidays provide interesting excursions and detours that give you an idea of traditional ways of life in these high reaches while helping to preserve these practises through tourism.

For those who would prefer a more easy-going approach then the south of the country is perfect – the terrain around the coast is much flatter. Alternatively, consider an e-bike trip, which will make those tricky ascents fly by.

Tailor made or small group tours?

Our tailor made cycling tours in Montenegro are self guided, so you have the freedom to go as fast or as slow as you like. Fancy stopping off for a picnic, a spot of wild swimming, or a refreshing drink at a roadside tavern? It’s entirely up to you. High quality bikes are provided, along with complete support, including GPS devices, detailed maps, and route notes that carry handy suggestions for local restaurants to visit and landmarks to look out for.

For those new to cycling holidays, our small group holidays might be a better option. Following a fixed itinerary, you’ll be led throughout by a local guide, so there’s no need to worry about directions. Usually a support van will accompany you, too. These trips are by their nature very sociable – expect to be on first name terms early on, and a tightly bonded group by the end of a week. Small group cycling trips are lovely because you’ve always got new people to chat with every day, and someone to cheer you on to the top of every hill.

Point to point riding or centre based?

Most of our Montenegro cycling holidays are point-to-point, so you’ll be staying somewhere different every night, or every couple of nights. These are more adventurous trips, and over the course of 7-10 days you can see a great deal of the country, or even the wider Balkan region. Your luggage will be transferred ahead of you, so that you can travel lightweight.

Centre-based trips take a more relaxed approach, with stays in just one or two places. This minimises the amount of unpacking you have to do and allows you to really explore the area you’re in rather than simply passing straight through it. Hotels are chosen with access to a variety of routes in the close vicinity.

Whichever option you choose, you’ll be staying in locally run hotels and guest houses that welcome cyclists. Travelling by bike allows you to reach quite remote areas, and so your visit enables the economic benefits of tourism to extend into small communities that don’t see a lot of visitors.

Are electric bikes available?

Our electric bike tours in Montenegro make cycling in this mountainous country a breeze. Even the steepest of inclines becomes much easier. You still need to pedal of course, but it feels like having a hand at your back just pushing you along. Other trips where you will be provided with a standard road or hybrid bike may also have an e-bike option, but these may be subject to availability and a small supplement, so do make sure you note your preference when making an enquiry.

The day we traveled from Ulcinj to Virpazar was wonderful, especially as we got a van ride for the first 20 km, avoiding retracing the section with dangerous cross town traffic and shoulder-less road to the junction. The ride from there was absolutely superb. read more
