CARBON REDUCTION

The Glass Kota Adventure under the Northern Lights tour is designed for low-impact exploration of the Arctic wilderness. Guests stay at Nivunki Village, a remote site featuring glass-roofed Kota cabins that blend into the landscape and reduce energy demands with framed glass designed to minimize heat loss.

Daily excursions rely on human-powered activities and shared transport. This includes husky safaris and snowshoe treks which lead guests silently through pristine forests and across frozen lakes, avoiding the need for privately driven vehicles and cutting individual carbon footprints. This gives all guests an authentic, ecofriendly experience.

Meals are centred on local, seasonal ingredients, that are served in the village’s traditional Finnish style restaurant, in aid to reduce “food miles” and support small-scale local Finnish farmers. All these measures such as efficient lodging, non-motorised exploration, and local sourcing all come together to reduce the trip’s carbon impact while immersing guests in Finland’s wild beauty.

ENVIRONMENT AND WILDLIFE

Respect for the Arctic environment guides every choice on this tour. All activities adhere to sustainable tourism principles, by ensuring guests observe wildlife from a distance, stay on marked trails, and leave no trace. This conscious approach protects fragile ecosystems and preserves the wilderness for future visitors and keeps the authentic feel as well as respecting the landscapes of the Arctic.

One highlight of Nivunki Village is the ethically managed husky safari. Guests visit a local husky farm, learn about the dogs and their tailored care, and witness responsible husky-sledding traditions that honour animal welfare as well as Sámi heritage.
The same principles apply during reindeer interaction, where guests meet herds respectfully, learning about Sámi reindeer culture without disturbing the land. Throughout, lighting is kept minimal to reduce light pollution, preserving the natural darkness crucial for both wildlife and Northern Lights viewing.

LOCAL ECONOMY

By staying at Nivunki Village, guests channel tourism income directly into the Muonio region. As a locally operated lodge, it supports local staff, guides, and food suppliers, circulating revenue within the community and bolstering small-scale enterprises. Guests also engage with local crafts and culture, including meeting Sámi reindeer herders, enjoying traditional meals, and spending time in village workshops, which ultimately contributes towards helping preserve cultural knowledge and the livelihoods of the indigenous people.

EMPLOYMENT, INCLUSIVITY, AND DIVERSITY

The tour employs local guides and staff, ensuring that job creation benefits residents and maintains deep ties with Sámi and Finnish Arctic traditions This local-hire approach not only delivers expert knowledge but also nurtures community development and cultural continuity.

The Aurora Zone is known for promoting inclusive and eco-friendly travel, and despite the remote setting, everyone (regardless of age, gender, nationality, or background) is welcomed. Finland’s broad commitment to equality underpins the experience; travellers can explore with confidence, knowing that local staff are supported with fair employment practices and respectful cultural engagement.
