Responsible Travel

As the pioneers of responsible tourism, we've screened this (and every) holiday so that you can travel knowing we've worked to maximise the benefits of your holiday to local people and places, and minimise any negative impacts.

Planet

This itinerary is designed with sustainability in mind, minimising air travel and utilising shared transportation. Long drives reduce individual carbon footprints, offering a more eco-friendly way to explore the region’s vast landscapes.

As a small group tour, we ensure minimal impact on the environments and communities we visit. Our approach fosters respectful, low-impact travel that avoids disruption or displacement of local populations.

A key highlight of the trip is the opportunity to explore destinations like Son Kul Lake on foot or horseback. These activities not only provide a deeper connection to nature but also reduce reliance on motorised transport, making for a more sustainable experience.

Meals throughout the journey are locally sourced, supporting regional agriculture and reducing the environmental footprint of imported food. Traditional home-cooked meals—especially in rural settings like Aydarkul Lake—directly benefit locals while enhancing the authenticity of the travel experience. A true highlight is visiting a guesthouse in the Nuratau Mountains. The hosts of this household raise livestock, including sheep, cows, and goats. Like most guesthouses in the Nuratau Mountains, they produce their own butter, yogurt, and other dairy products. All the dishes served in the guesthouses are made exclusively from natural ingredients sourced within the village.

Accommodations also reflect our commitment to sustainability. Staying in traditional yurts at Son Kul Lake and Tash Rabat allows travelers to experience eco-friendly lodging that utilises low-impact materials and wood-burning stoves, minimising the trip’s carbon footprint while offering a unique cultural connection. Staying in yurt camps offers an authentic, low-impact experience, where limited electricity helps preserve the traditional way of life while reducing environmental strain.

Visits to protected areas, including Son Kul Lake, and historical landmarks such as Burana Tower and Tash Rabat Caravanserai, contribute to conservation efforts. Entrance fees help preserve these cultural and natural sites, ensuring they remain for future generations to explore.

On Day 11, you’ll visit the Severcev Sheep Nursery, home to the rare Wild Argali sheep—an endangered species added to the IUCN Red List in 2020. This visit directly supports conservation initiatives protecting these remarkable animals.

By prioritising responsible travel, this journey offers an enriching way to experience Central Asia while actively contributing to its preservation.

People

This itinerary is designed to directly support local economies by staying with local families and visiting artisan workshops, such as the traditional papermaking workshop in Konigil Village. These experiences not only provide financial benefits to rural communities but also help preserve traditional crafts, ensuring that local artisans and their skills continue to thrive.

Throughout the journey, travelers will engage with a variety of local communities—from nomadic families to skilled artisans—fostering meaningful cultural exchanges while contributing to the sustainability of local traditions. These interactions promote mutual respect and understanding, while also providing valuable economic opportunities.

The tour prioritises hiring local guides, hosts, and artisans who share their deep knowledge of the region, directly contributing to local employment. By working exclusively with local partners, the trip helps sustain livelihoods in rural areas where tourism is a crucial source of income.

A key aspect of this journey is the commitment to supporting nomadic communities. Travelers will stay in locally owned, family-run accommodations, including a night at a guesthouse in Ukhum Village on Day 10. These stays provide an authentic cultural experience while ensuring that tourism benefits local households directly.

Unlike many other operators, we exclusively employ local guides and service providers, adhering to fair labor practices and prioritising economic opportunities for the regions we visit. We believe that locals are the best storytellers of their own heritage, eliminating the need for foreign tour leaders, which not only reduces costs for travelers but also lowers the trip’s carbon footprint.

This itinerary also fosters inclusivity by engaging with diverse communities, giving people from different backgrounds the opportunity to share their culture and traditions with visitors. By providing a platform for local participation in tourism, we ensure that the economic benefits of travel are shared equitably across the regions we explore.
