1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?

The overnight stay in the crystal lavvo was amazing. Francisco is a great host and we had the luck to see some northern lights. Also the husky hike was very exciting. There are hundreds of huskies on the farm all howling and waiting for you to come, cuddle them and take them for a (very fast) walk :).

2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?

For the husky hike it is good to have some fitness. The dogs really have power and you need to look where you run, which is not that easy, as it is dark and the
terrain is uneven.

3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?

All activities were run by local people. The husky hike is a good thing for the dogs. There are hundreds of huskies and they need exercise during all seasons of the year which would probably not be possible without all the tourists hiking and sledding with them.

4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?

It was a really great holiday and I would recommend it to everyone who wants to experience the highlights of northern Norway in a very short trip. It is a good
mixture of varied activities and leisure time. Nevertheless I have to deduct one point as on the second day before the RIB-tour you have to check-out from the
hotel and cannot take a break or a shower after the RIB-tour, which definitely would have been good before traveling to the crystal lavvos.

CARBON REDUCTION

All activity transfers are shared wherever possible and an airport shuttle bus is booked for guests to lower their carbon footprint. During the guests' overnight stays in Tromsø, their accommodation is only a short walk away from the popular and frequently visited city centre. This will diminish the need for transport to and from Tromsø and, in turn, will minimise the emission of harmful chemicals from cars and buses on this trip.

The Clarion hotel in Tromso reduces the carbon footprint of your hotel stay in several ways. In April 2022, they launched their own Climate Fund with the aim of reducing carbon dioxide emissions in our own operations, but also to finance the development of climate-friendly solutions in the hotel industry. In 2022, they were able to donate 17 MNOK to the fund, which resulted in investment in a total of 28 projects for reducing carbon dioxide at their existing hotels and support for several startups that develop sustainable solutions for the tourism industry.

ENVIRONMENT & WILDLIFE

Whilst they are here, guests spend their time undertaking environmentally sound activities, including a husky hike. The region’s animal-focused businesses ensure the animals appropriately exercised, healthy and happy. Animal welfare is a top priority for these businesses. The huskies are well taken care of in the farm, and inspections of the dogs’ housing, food, drink and hygiene are carried out regularly. They are also visited frequently by a vet, ensuring that their general health is constantly checked and maintained.

The Clarion hotel is powered by renewable energy including solar cells on the roof and sensor-controlled shower faucets. Sustainable and organic food is at the center of the hotel and has served organic products on the breakfast buffets since 2007.

Only sustainable fish and meat on the table, they use the WWF's seafood guide to prepare our own red list. Also by reducing the size of the plate by a couple of centimeters and a sign with the call to eat the food, they reduced waste by as much as 20%.They are a completely palm oil-free hotel.

At the tradional huts they serve Bacalao - a traditional Norwegian fish dish made from locally sourced co and the mattresses and duvets are filled with pure sheep wool.

LOCAL ECONOMY

Each activity is delivered by an expert, knowledgeable guide. Not all meals are included in this trip to encourage guests to explore Tromso city centre and support independent cafes, bars and restaurants. There is also free time on the agenda to give guests the opportunity to visit local attractions and purchase souvenirs from local craftspeople and artisan makers.

Employment, Inclusivity and Diversity

Villmarkssenter is a family run centre. At it’s peak in 2019, Villmarkssenter hired 100 international employees. Since Covid-19, the centre now employs 60-70 employees every winter season.

Clarion Hotel The Edge prides itself on it’s inclusivity and diversity within its workforce. The company fosters a community where employees feel valued and can reach their full potential. On top of the standard job benefits, Clarion Hotel The Edge gifts workers a wellness allowance and complimentary stays at the collection of Strawberry hotels. They promote equal rights above all and are proud sponsors of Pride.
