1 Reviews of Lake District walking holiday, England
5 out of 5 stars

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?
The most memorable part of my vacation is the fact that British Airways lost my luggage, and I was without my clothes and equipment for 5 days. In spite of
this, the Hassness House staff and my fellow travelers came to my aid in remarkable ways. I thoroughly enjoyed every activity and hike. The countryside
was breathtaking. Hassness Country House is a fantastic place to stay. Lucy is a talented and generous hostess, and Dinko is a fabulous cook! Our guide,
Derek, is a skilled and knowledgeable leader to say the least, but the man he is, outshines most. His endless energy was noteworthy in his care not only for
us, but his colleagues and the grounds of Hassness House as well. On a daily basis, Derek was caring for the grounds (mowing, pruning, making repairs, and
even wrangling a wandering lamb), before and after our day of hiking and site seeing. His knowledge of the Lake District is extraordinary, and he regaled us
with wonderful facts and stories.
2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?
Be prepared for various kinds of weather and bring walking sticks. Not all the hikes need them, but they're good to have on hand.
3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?
I do not think my vacation reduced environmental impact or supported conservation. Thousands of people visit the Lake District this time of year, and the
land definitely showed signs of human impact. Around Buttermere Lake, there were illegal campers and some overflowing waste bins. However, I'm certain
the local economies benefit by visitors.
4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?
Overall, I rate my vacation as a 5. I loved it.

Planet
Given most of the time is spent exploring on foot, the trip itself is low carbon. it is important that our staff, local partners and customers are aware of the delicate balance which exists in the places we visit, and leave no trace. It is safe to drink the water from the tap in England. For customers keen to avoid buying single use plastic bottles, we encourage them to take advantage of our discounted filter Water-To-Go bottle which removes over 99.9% of all microbiological contaminants in water. These are available at the country house used on this trip. Alternatively they are able to bring their own reusable water bottle and fill this up at the house.
We operate a ‘leave no trace’ policy on tour; our tour leaders are trained to promote this message. As the focus of this trip is primarily walking, we aim to leave a minimal impact on the areas as possible. This includes not deviating from designated walking areas so as not to upset ecosystems irrespective of the size.
We encourage customers not to feed wildlife including birds and red squirrels as they become reliant on tourists. The country house is careful to separate waste for recycling.
We are committed to offering low impact holidays that benefit the country and communities we visit. This trip is primarily spent on foot walking, in a more remote areas of the Lake District.

We stay in a country house on the shores of Buttermere in the Lake District. Customers make their own way to the start of the tour; we give clear instructions on reaching the house using public transport. One of the walks departs directly from the front door of the country house. All meals are provided at the house using a combination of locally sourced food and whole foods. On Tuesday evenings dinner is taken at a local restaurant helping to support local businesses.
We have and continue to financially supported projects throughout the areas visited on this tour in the Lake District. This includes the rebuilding of bridges washed away and walking paths which have fallen into disrepair, ensuring paths are maintained for years to come.
Every Thursday the Cumbrian Mountain Rescue team visit the country house to give a talk about what they do and sell items for support. As a business, we support this company financially on an annual basis.
We cap customers at a maximum of 19 so as not to impact the environment surrounding Buttermere. We employ the services of local outfitter to transport us to and from hiking trailheads.
