1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?

There were a number of really unique experiences that made the holiday so enjoyable. These reflected the care and effort that Sara went to make the varied days so full of learning and fun. The structure of learning Spanish vocabulary appropriate to the day ahead (whether an artisan market experience, appreciating the landscape of an adventure walk or simply preparing to use the buses) was a great balance. We got to see and experience a great deal of the real Tenerife, even down to collecting and cooking the iconic canarian potatoes. We were also incredibly fortunate to experience an add-on to the trip in the form of a stargazing walk with Sara’s partner who happens to have a PhD in astrophysics! 2km up El Teide volcano well beyond the clouds in Teide National Park, where the sky is beautifully clear with no light pollution, we were able to experience the night sky like never before and just happen to be there at the peak of the Orionid meteor shower, seeing five shooting stars – an incredible and unforgettable experience.

2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?

Really think through what you want out of the experience and take advantage of a personal video call with Sara to refine your plan. Any observations we have on improving the experience are really down to us – in particular, not trying to cram too much into a short period of time, which is demanding for everyone.

3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?

Everything was geared around an authentic local experience. So, supporting local shops, learning to use local buses and eating in local restaurants was an important part of the itinerary. Sara provided great insight into the culture and respect for the heritage which helped us appreciate and enjoy the real Tenerife. Being introduced to and educated in sustainable local produce like the goats cheese, canarian potato varieties and Teide honey was part of the culinary joy of the trip. [Of course a single flight to Tenerife dwarfs any carbon footprint incurred during the visit and that’s always a moral dilemma to navigate for a holiday far from home.]

4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?

It was a wonderful experience and something we would do again. The bespoke nature of the visit was an experiment for both us and for Sara so, inevitably, there were some things we would do a little differently next time – like shorter, more focused days. That said, we might not have got to see and enjoy all the great things that we did by having five full-on days. Importantly, it was both a fabulous personalised learning experience and enjoyable holiday so something to be recommended.

Responsible Travel

As the pioneers of responsible tourism, we've screened this (and every) holiday so that you can travel knowing we've worked to maximise the benefits of your holiday to local people and places, and minimise any negative impacts.

Planet

CARBON REDUCTION

We encourage sustainable travel practices by prioritizing local and low-impact activities. Guests are asked to bring reusable water bottles to minimize single-use plastics, and we reduce waste by sourcing local, seasonal products with minimal packaging. Meals are primarily vegetarian, featuring fresh, seasonal produce from local markets and occasionally my own garden, reducing the carbon footprint.

Walking and shared public transportation form the core of our itinerary. For instance, we explore rural paths and volcanic trails on foot, encouraging a deeper connection with nature while minimizing carbon emissions. Guests also receive practical eco-tips to reduce their impact during their stay, fostering eco-conscious habits.

ENVIRONMENT AND WILDLIFE

As an official Canary Islands guide, I focus on raising awareness of the fragility and richness of Tenerife’s ecosystems. During visits to rural and natural areas, we emphasize "leave no trace" principles, encourage recycling, and promote responsible tourism practices. Guests gain insight into traditional farming at my vegetable garden, where we discuss sustainable practices like crop rotation and organic cultivation.

While the trip does not include protected area entry fees, it fosters deep appreciation for nature, ensuring that participants leave with a greater awareness of their role in protecting biodiversity.

LOCAL ECONOMY

This tour is designed to support the local economy by partnering with small businesses and family-owned accommodations. Travellers stay in rural properties operated by locals, and throughout the trip, they have opportunities to shop at local shops and markets, directly contributing to Tenerife's economy.

The dining experience is exclusively at traditional, family-run restaurant, which helps ensure that local establishments benefit from tourism. Additionally, the excursions are focused on less-explored areas, diverting the flow of visitors from typical tourist hotspots and spreading economic benefits to rural regions.

One of the highlights of the tour is a visit to Icod el Alto, where travellers can connect with local farmers and enjoy fresh produce grown in the guide’s own garden. This interaction fosters personal connections and promotes the sustainable practice of traditional farming, further supporting Tenerife’s rural communities.

EMPLOYMENT, INCLUSIVITY, AND DIVERSITY

The tour is designed and led by a local female guide, creating opportunities for cultural exchange in rural areas that are often overlooked by mass tourism.

This tour is inclusive, with an emphasis on respecting and welcoming all travellers, including those who identify as LGBTQ+. It actively promotes inclusivity by supporting fair wages for local collaborators and providing equitable opportunities within the tourism industry.

The tour celebrates Tenerife’s cultural diversity by embracing its rural traditions and encouraging a deeper understanding of the island’s rich heritage. This approach ensures that every aspect of the tour, from the guides to the experiences, fosters meaningful connections and mutual respect, while also promoting social and cultural diversity within the local economy.
