1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?

There was too many to choose from my top three: Machu Picchu - the train, the town, the site itself, Lake Titicaca - floating islands boat trips, the 4x4 across the salt plains and Atacama desert- scenery and driving experience

2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?

Be prepared for a lot of 'extras' - there was a lot of 'free' half days / days which involved paid for excursions otherwise you will be kicking your heels.

3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?

Yes, there were specific projects we saw and as with all yours you contribute to local economies

4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?

My issues were: All local tour companies all no doubt taking a margin - I accept Responsible Travel use partners and the operators were excellent in responding to my requests. The tour company team were Ok but I felt it was all about sucking money from you in extras (I would NOT use them again), the local operator varied but were generally good.
Water - I have never been on a tour where water is not provided either in hotels or on vehicles - paying for group water for the tour just felt again like money making and did not favour me - I often found I had to buy water anyway as it had run out - this absolutely hacked me off.
Transfers - I only found out a few days before I travelled that incoming and outgoing flights not covered by transfers - these were 'extras'. Again never experienced this on a tour before. Travelling into a new country you have not experienced before not knowing the language then i would not want to have to fend for myself. Again this hacked me off.
Hotels - all were clean but very basic, some better than others. As almost expected, some of the facilities didn't work and I gave up on trying to get them fixed just made do. Breakfast was included according to the app in San Pedro but the tour company said it was not. When I pointed to the app they conveniently ignored it.

Aside from the criticism and my views on the tour company who I would not travel with again, the experience of Peru, Bolivia and Chile was fantastic and well worth the visit - a great tour.

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?

Bolivian and high Andean landscapes.

2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?

A great trip to see some difficult to reach places, requires you to be young or young at heart. Staggering scenery and wonderful, humbling people, the trip gives a sense of achievement and understanding of this important part of the world.

3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?

The first, yes, but with three internal flights not the second.

4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?

Excellent.

Responsible Travel

As the pioneers of responsible tourism, we've screened this (and every) holiday so that you can travel knowing we've worked to maximise the benefits of your holiday to local people and places, and minimise any negative impacts.

Planet

Through our commitment to responsible tourism, we ensure minimal social and environmental impact in the places we visit by travelling in small groups, using local transportation and staying in locally owned hotels. We also work with experienced local guides who are knowledgeable of local culture, history, flora and fauna.

Our tours mainly use public transportation wherever possible and are small in size to keep our impact on fragile sites and communities as minimal as possible. We monitor the sustainability of our tours through traveller evaluations and through feedback from our tour leaders in order to allow for continuous improvement. We support the local economy and business initiatives by visiting local shops, restaurants, and markets on our tours.

Tour leaders provide travellers with information about local environmental issues in their respective regions, and provide suggestions of how we can best protect the local environment and culture. To reduce the amount of waste created on tours, tour leaders also encourage travellers to use refillable water bottles instead of disposable plastic, cotton tote bags, reusable batteries, etc. We also include destination-specific information in our guidebooks, which are provided to each traveller including information particular to the local culture and environment and tips on how to be a responsible traveller.

This company has operated on responsible tourism values since its inception. From an environmental perspective, our initiatives extend from our company offices to our tours. A local green energy provider powers our head office and stores; we encourage cleaner transportation methods for staff; and purchase all supplies from a local green business supplier. Our office is as paperless as possible and our brochures use 100% PEFC certified sustainable paper.

People

Supporting communities is and always has been at the heart of our tours. We provide business opportunities to local people by employing local guides and tour operators. The majority of accommodation used on our tours are small-scale, locally-owned hotels.

Many tours incorporate community projects as a way of supplementing community income and supporting community development projects. In 2003 we founded a non-profit organisation as a way for our travellers and our company to give back to the people and places we visit. We develop community projects around the world in the areas of health, education, small business development and environmental conservation. Funds are raised through traveller donations and fundraising. The company pays all administration fees which means that 100% of each individual donation goes directly to the community projects. Each year, we continue to support and develop new partnerships with more community projects and community-based tourism initiatives worldwide, in Latin America, Asia and Africa. On many tours, you have the option to visit a project as part of your trip.

In Peru we work closely with the Inca Porter Project (IPP) a non-profit organization that works to improve the lives and working conditions of porters on the Inca Trail. Together with IPP we have provided porter communities first-aid and job training workshops and ensure fair working conditions to all of our porters.
