Our luxury holidays in Botswana

Our luxury travel holidays in Botswana typically focus on the lush north, where wildlife thrives beside the Chobe River and Okavango Delta. With migration routes protected by massive trans-frontier parks, this region is home to more elephants than anywhere else in Africa, plus some of the highest concentrations of lions, giraffes, hippos, wildebeest and buffalo – and over 450 bird species. Our luxurious holidays are about far more than five stars and fluffy towels. Cruise the Okavango, take nocturnal bushwalks, and return to a stylish lodge or safari camp. All the while, passionate and experienced wildlife guides can ensure that you get ten-star wildlife experiences to go with that five-star accommodation.

Why chose a luxury Botswana holiday

The abundance of wildlife in Botswana is a huge draw, and visitor numbers are strictly controlled, ensuring game viewing here is more personal than in some African safari destinations. This luxury is complemented by Botswana’s exceptional accommodation, with beautifully designed lodges and camps in cracking locations, often pioneering environmentally responsible practices. You can find this in some parks in Tanzania, Kenya and South Africa, but in Botswana this complete luxury experience comes as standard, making a visit here the dream cocktail of authentic Africa with zero compromise on comfort.

Accommodation

Private reserves and superb, fly in safari lodges, particularly around Chobe National Park, are the last word in comfort, featuring rooms with air con plus treats such as a cocktail bar and health spa on site. You will also find luxury bush pavilions, with indoor and outdoor showers, and well equipped, en suite safari tents, tucked thoughtfully in the shade of acacia trees. In addition, all camps cater for really small numbers – typically a maximum of 10 rooms – and are located deep inside reserves in the more remote parts of the country, where the best wildlife viewing can be found, often directly from your private terrace.

Choice & freedom

Luxury trips offer the freedom to choose between a range of activities, so you can explore Botswana’s remarkable landscapes in more ways than one. There are game drives and walks, river cruises and peaceful tours of the waterways in a traditional mokoro dugout canoe. It’s even possible to take a nighttime game drive to see nocturnal creatures, all accompanied by experienced guides. If you want some R&R alongside your wildlife spotting, you’re free to relax at your accommodation. Swim, pop to the spa, relax in the library or hit the gym. There may even be a choice of lodges offered within one area – in the Savuti marshes, or nearer to the Chobe River, for example.

Best time to go

From Nov-Mar, temperatures are more pleasant, with late afternoon rains refreshing the landscape and calming the heat. This is the time to see migratory birds and baby antelopes. The rainy skies don’t equate to water on the ground, though, with rainfall taking six months to filter through the sprawling Okavango Delta, so it’s not at its fullest until the driest months. Arid May-Jun can be extremely chilly, and the heat builds now until peaking in the high 30°Cs in October. This is the best time to see game, as it heads to the Delta to drink.

Chobe National Park

Nourished by the Chobe and Linyanti Rivers, Chobe is Botswana’s oldest national park, and boasts one of the highest concentrations of wildlife in the whole of Africa. Elephants – numbering over 50,000 – congregate along the riverbank during the dry winter months alongside thousands of buffalo. Big predators are commonly sighted here, along with giraffe, hippo and over 450 species of birds.

Makgadikgadi Pans Game Reserve

Once part of a huge, African super lake, Makgadikgadi now consists of many large salt pans which are seasonally covered in water and grass. Wildebeest, zebra and flamingos congregate here, and ancient baobab trees dot the surreal, salt desert. Kubu Island, in the middle of a blindingly white pan, is a sacred spot for local communities; concentric dry stone walls speak of its ancient inhabitants.

Moremi Game Reserve

The Okavango Delta’s only national protected area, Moremi shelters a fantastic variety of wildlife in its islands, floodplains, grassland and forests – including the Big Five, thanks to the recent reintroduction of rhino. Moremi was originally established by local BaTawana to protect the land from hunters and farmers; their success is evident in the reserve’s unspoiled ecosystems and well controlled tourism.

Okavango Delta

The immense oasis of the Okavango Delta literally pours life into the parched Kalahari Desert. It’s Africa’s largest inland delta, spreading over 15,000km², where 122 species of mammals live– including the Big Five – along with over 400 species of birds. There are numerous reserves, lodges and camps; float past giraffes, elephants, warthogs and lions on a dugout canoe, or join a community guide for a bush walk.

Savuti Marsh

The Savuti River channels water 100km across the Chobe National Park into the immense Savuti Marsh. Famed for its large predators, the rainy season floods also attract 450 species of birds, along with huge herds of zebra and wildebeest. The dead trees along the channel grew during dry periods - the channel can dry out for decades - and were drowned when the waters returned.

Almost impossible to say. We saw big cats every day of the trip as well as so many other wonderful animals. It was a great holiday. Saw all the animals I hope to see and although not a birder many superb birds. The three areas of the Okavango that we stayed in were all different but equally thrilling. As a bit cat lover, to have seen leopard, cheetah and lions all in 9 days was more than I expected. Our guide was more than a guide, ensuring we had all the opportunity we needed to take photos, making...read more
