Our luxury Tanzania holidays & tours

With its gorgeous safari lodges and exclusive island resorts, Tanzania is well set up for high-end travel. Pay a bit more and you can spot wildlife in remote wildernesses or stay in eco-friendly tree houses, untroubled by crowds. Tourism in Tanzania has developed more thoughtfully than in neighbouring Kenya, with fewer cheap packages and more personalised experiences. It’s largely undeveloped, and huge enough to keep some corners off the tourist trail. Our luxury holidays in Tanzania boast impressive environmental and social credentials, from employing Maasai guides and investing in local schools and clinics, to tree planting and other environmental projects. After all, for many of us, enjoying a luxury experience is only justifiable if it brings genuine benefits to the community and wider environment, too.

Highlights of our luxury Tanzania holidays

Where will I go on a luxury holiday in Tanzania?

Tanzania can serve up its most famous attractions in high style. The Serengeti, Ngorongoro Crater, the Maasai, Zanzibar and the Great Migration, which roams across the northern plains throughout the year, can all be experienced the luxury way, with private guides, comfy vehicles, domestic flights and deluxe accommodation. Further afield, Nyerere National Park and Ruaha National Park are far off the beaten track in the south, with only a handful of lodges, and they’re best reached by an internal flight. All this pushes up the price tag, but their remoteness and exclusivity means you’ll have the impressive wildlife pretty much to yourself.

Where will I stay on a luxury holiday in Tanzania?

Most upmarket safari lodges offer the kind of comfort that is extremely welcome after days out on dusty, bumpy game drives. You’ll get a very personal service – usually hosted by a camp manager which gives a feel of a house ‘party’; high quality food and unusual dining experiences round a fire or by the river. In your spacious room, expect luxurious toiletries, perhaps sherry, possibly a butler (yes really) and comfortable beds. You’ll be paying for the compact and bijou size of the lodge, and for the location, which often allows for game viewing from your private terrace. On Zanzibar and the Mafia archipelago, going luxe scores you your own castaway fantasy tree house or eco lodge with private beach!

What activities might I do on a luxury holiday in Tanzania?

A luxury tour gives you the freedom and flexibility to tailor make your Tanzania holiday, spending as much time as you like in each destination, perhaps with the benefit of a dedicated driver or guide for a truly personal experience. In the parks and reserves, walking safaris and the chance to spend a night fly camping in the bush are available, but the menu of optional activities doesn’t stop there. Choose to take a spice tour of Stone Town in Zanzibar, an ethno-botanical guided walk, hot air balloon rides, horse riding, helicopter flights, visits to local communities or mountain biking.

Practicalities on a luxury holiday in Tanzania

A luxury holiday in Tanzania typically includes a driver meeting you at Dar Es Salaam airport or one of the local airstrips. There will be comfortable 4x4s to take you on game drives, accompanied by a private guide, and internal flights in small planes to cover the miles between Dar Es Salaam, Kilimanjaro, Nyerere, Ruaha and Zanzibar. Obviously, a luxury trip can’t magically iron out Tanzania’s pitted, dusty roads, so expect any overland travel to bounce you around, but that’s part of the adventure, whatever you pay! A luxury safari will generally mean sharing your wildlife experience with fewer people. Most bush and beach itineraries finish with a relaxing stay on Zanzibar, Mafia or Chole Islands, where snorkelling, swimming and sun worshipping are the luxurious full stop.

It was an excellent holiday and the mixture of hectic safari and downtime on the beach worked very well indeed. Hot air balloon ride over the Serengeti and also the excellent service at all the Elewana hotels.read more

We give this trip a 10+++. Even though we were traveling with a mobility disability, the entire holiday was planned for our complete comfort. We never thought we would be able to see and do the things we did given the mobility restrictions. Job well done.read more
