Description of Mexico City to Oaxaca tour

Enjoy a delectable taste of Mexican culture with a captivating cultural holiday. This Mexico City to Oaxaca tour dips into street food, fascinating ruins left behind by ancient civilisations, and a number of artisan handicraft demonstrations that both support local businesses and give you the chance to find some truly original Mexican souvenirs.

In company of a knowledgeable tour leader, who will be complimented at various stages by expert local guides, you’ll join a small group of fellow travellers to journey from the Mexican capital to Oaxaca, one of the country’s most vibrant cities. This is a fantastic trip for anyone looking to explore Mexican culture in an authentic way, with plenty of good company too.

Over the course of a week, a well-planned route takes you from Mexico City to Puebla, renowned for how it has preserved the architecture of the Spanish colonial era, before spending a few days exploring the region around the charming city of Oaxaca. You’ll travel at a relaxed pace that fits in a great number of interesting cultural experiences, while never feeling rushed.

And as you journey from place to place, you’ll have plenty of time to get to know your travelling companions as well as your tour leader, who will be happy to share their knowledge of Mexican history and culture.

Mexico’s present is inextricably bound up with its past, such is the prestige of the many archaeological complexes around the country. Spend a day at Teotihuacan, once the Aztec capital, strolling the Avenue of the Dead and exploring the Pyramids of the Sun and the Moon, to learn about life there 2,000 years ago. Other fascinating sites include the vast Great Pyramid of Cholula, and the Mitla ruins near Oaxaca.

Many traditional industries are kept alive in Mexico by the skill and dedication of artisan craftspeople. This tour not only supports a range of small locally owned businesses through organising visits, but it also gives you lots of great opportunities to find unique souvenirs of your holiday. One day might find you taking part in a Zapotec weaving demonstration, watching as a family works on rugs and clothing that can take months to complete. Another might see you visit a family that produces beautiful stonework from obsidian, a volcanic glass-like rock.

Another fantastic way to sample Mexican culture is of course through its diverse and delicious cuisine. And wow, does this trip deliver on that score. From street food tours in Mexico City to (optional) cookery classes in Oaxaca, sampling traditional ice cream perhaps flavoured with chilli, to dinner at an award-winning, five-star restaurant, foodies will be in paradise. And because so many of the ingredients you’ll enjoy here are seasonal and locally sourced, it’s also a great way to keep down the carbon footprint of your trip.

Holiday information

Small group tour, ideal for solos & couples:
Small group travel is not large group travel scaled down. It is modeled on independent travel – but with the advantage of a group leader to take care of the itinerary, accommodation and tickets, and dealing with the language. It’s easy to tick off the big sights independently – but finding those one-off experiences, local festivals, travelling markets and secret viewpoints is almost impossible for someone without the insider knowledge gained from years in the field. For those with limited time, a small group tour will save valuable time in planning, and on holiday.
Top tip:
This Mexico holiday is definitely one for the foodie traveller - take a look at that itinerary! The one essential to pack is a good appetite.
Trip type:
Fully escorted small group tour.
Activity level:
Easy - some sightseeing tours on foot.
Accomm:
Small, locally owned hotels throughout.
Meals:
7 breakfasts, 2 lunches, 3 dinners
Included:
Professional tour leader; accommodation; all transfers; all activities as laid out in the itinerary.

Responsible Travel

As the pioneers of responsible tourism, we've screened this (and every) holiday so that you can travel knowing we've worked to maximise the benefits of your holiday to local people and places, and minimise any negative impacts.

Planet

Where possible we choose to travel by land rather than air. By minimizing the use of flights on our trips, we are making journeys more stimulating and more sustainable for travellers. This trip through Mexico does not include any flights, providing all transport by road. We ensure our vehicles are fuel-efficient and well maintained with regular servicing. We use vehicles that are an appropriate size to suit the group size. For example, we wouldn’t use a 16-seater van if we only had five people travelling with us. We optimize our driving routes to reduce travel time and our carbon footprint, and we turn the engine off when travellers are visiting a site and not in the vehicle.

We provide training to trip leaders on water consumption best practices and how to encourage their travellers to follow these principles too. We continue to work with local suppliers on water management initiatives. For example, encouraging hotel owners to provide water refill stations, and in-room signage requesting short showers, repeated towel use and turning taps off. While tap water may not be safe to drink in Mexico, we still encourages travellers to bring their own reusable water bottles. Our leaders will suggest and facilitate the purchase of larger containers of water for the group so that travellers can refill their reusable water bottles from this source. This reduces the number of single-use plastic water bottles disposed of by our travellers.

People

Our trips maximize the opportunity for travellers to engage meaningfully with local culture and communities. Many experiences on our trips also support traditional cultural practices – whether artisanal, culinary or otherwise. In turn, this helps to sustain and preserve these traditional practices so that future generations may continue to learn, enjoy and benefit from them. This Mexican trip includes visits to several family-owned businesses that produce historical crafts using traditional methods. These include beeswax candle-making, Zapotec weaving and obsidian stonework.

Our leaders provide travellers with a Spanish language sheet when they join this Mexican trip. Leaders conduct a quick lesson to help travellers become more confident with commonly used words and phrases. Travellers can then be polite and friendly in their interactions with locals throughout Mexico, using greetings, please and thank you to show their respect.
