Mexico, Guatemala and Belize holiday
Description of Mexico, Guatemala and Belize holiday
This Central America overland epic takes you around Mexico’s Yucatan Peninsula and Central Highlands before venturing to two countries that are often overlooked by travellers in this part of the world but really shouldn’t be: Guatemala and Belize. Follow a carefully crafted route designed to showcase the cultural differences and natural landscapes of these three countries, taking in Maya sites, tiny mountain towns, and providing plenty of opportunities to relax and explore at your own pace. You’ll stay in locally owned hotels as far as possible, and be recommended many small, independent restaurants, helping to spread the economic benefits of tourism across the region
Beginning on Mexico’s sunbaked Playa del Carmen where you can adjust to the heat, you’ll travel further around the Yucatan Peninsula, beginning with Chichen Itza. One of the most well-preserved and fascinating relics of the Maya civilisation, the site is known for its Great Ball Court, and the Kukulkan Pyramid. Continuing via Campeche and Palenque, visit a mountain village near San Cristoba, to have lunch with a Tzotzil family, and learn about their rituals and ways of life.
Cross, then, into the Guatemalan Highlands, where you’ll spend a few days on the shores of Lake Atitlan, one of the most beautiful lakes in the world. After another few days in the attractive city of Antigua, take the only internal flight of the trip, to Flores After a tour of the Maya ruins of Tikal, still shrouded by jungle, it’s time to take your foot off the gas and relax for a while. Arriving in Belize, snorkel with rays, sharks and turtles in Caye Caulker, and kayak around Lake Bacalar, before finally heading back into Mexico, finishing in Tulum and Cancun.
Every aspect of this tailor made tour can be adjusted to your preferences. An extra day or two in Caye Caulker? A hotel upgrade in Playa del Carmen? A horse riding trip in Antigua? It’s entirely up to you. Rely on the guidance of travel experts in this region, who can help you enjoy different sides to Mexico, Guatemala and Belize beyond the main tourist trail.

Totally five star in every way. The whaleshark encounter was mind blowing and really was a once in a lifetime chance to enjoy seeing such amazing animals up close. Relaxing totally on a hammock on the jetty at Lake Bacalar as there was no reason to be doing anything else. Read full reviewReviewed on 24 Apr 2024 by Sinead McIntosh

Throughout this itinerary we use buses for all transfers, except from one flight between Mexico and Belize which can't be avoided. Travelling in this way significantly reduces co2 emissions and also allows you to see more of the country. As well as this we also try to only use small-scale and locally owned accommodation which not only gives customers an authentic experience but makes sure that the revenue from this tourism goes to local families and communities who are the ones who need it the most. For example, at Lake Bacalar we book an eco-hotel that uses 100% solar power, harvests rainwater, uses local suppliers and recycles everything possible.
Before departing on this trip, our customers will always receive an informative document called 'Be a responsible traveller', which provides useful advice on how they are able to travel in an environmentally-friendly way such as using reusable water bottles and limiting the amount of energy that they use.
The guides are all local and have an in-depth knowledge of the areas they work with, making sure it is respected by staff and visitors alike during excursions.
Our responsible travel journey starts in our office in Brighton where we provide our staff with a healthy lunch every day, we also collect our food waste for compost so that it doesn’t end up in the land fill. We also try recycle as much as we possibly can and are nearly a paperless company. The paper that we do use in our office comes from the same company we recycled it with resulting in a closed loop system.

Our local partner is accredited and provides an honest, local experience; promoting cultural and environmental immersion through close links with neighbourhood suppliers. Like us, they consider it their duty to promote sustainability through education and preservation of cultural and natural resources in their destinations. At home we strive to support local businesses, charities and the community. We offer all our staff a day out of the office to volunteer at the charity of their choice. We also use a local catering company for fresh, healthy lunches in our Brighton office everyday, and use a local recycling company for all our waste.
We believe in putting people first, and provide lots of benefits to our staff members in the UK to enhance their work and personal life, such as participating in the ride to work scheme, and providing discounts for local fitness centres and holistic therapies, and best of all a healthy free lunch – every working day!
