Mull wildlife holiday in Scotland
Description of Mull wildlife holiday in Scotland
For wildlife holidays in Scotland, looking west to the Isle of Mull is a good way to point your compass. The second largest island in the Inner Hebrides, wildlife is prolific, not least because of whale watching opportunities, with these Scottish waters home to minke whales and sometimes even an orca or two.
This independent week-long holiday includes three full day guided wildlife experiences plus plenty of time to explore as you wish. We pre-arrange a trip on the water in the company of expert local guides not only in search of whales, but also dolphins, basking sharks, porpoises and seals swimming off the shores of Mull. Another trip brings you to the nearby Treshnish Isles: from late spring into summer, you can see puffins up close and personal as they nest on these remote, uninhabited island idylls. And this Mull wildlife holiday spends as much time on land as it does on water, with local guides to help you spot red deer on the island’s mountainous south side, find hen harriers hovering over marshes and remote bays or maybe discover and marvel at otters playing or fishing by the shore. Other prolific birdlife to bring your binoculars for on Mull, but also some of the other small islands that we visit, include magnificent white tailed and golden eagles, cuckoos, skylarks and mistle thrush, to name but a few. There is so much to spot as you explore the main island, where there are 260 bird species alone.
You will stay for the week in Tobermory. Small but perfectly formed, your small hotel resides amidst Tobermory's elegant conservation area. High above the harbour, you can escape the village bustle yet are still just a short walk from Main Street. Sweeping views across the bay can be enjoyed from large comfortable sofas in one of the two guest lounges. With just six small, but beautifully furnished, bedrooms two even have a four-poster bed the friendly owners aim to make your stay a rather luxurious home from home.

A memorable experience....The wildlife in general (eagles, otters and more!), but in particular the boat trip to Staffa and the Treshnish Isles. Being able to get so close to puffins, razorbills and shags on Lunga was an incredible experience. Read full reviewReviewed on 08 May 2018 by Patricia Smith
We saw lots of wildlife but I think my most memorable moment was being surrounded by nesting puffins on Lunga Island. We had a wonderful time. Scotland is a marvellous country that I can’t recommend highly enough. Read full reviewReviewed on 27 Aug 2017 by Helen Arbon
We all loved the sheer breathtaking beauty of the island. The tour was fantastic; Jaquie was a brilliant, friendly and knowledgeable guide. Our tour was amazing because the dolphins and porpoises decided to put on a dazzling show! Read full reviewReviewed on 06 Aug 2017 by Diego Maritano

We are continually increasing our range of public transport holidays for those who actively choose low-carbon transport. This holiday has been carefully-designed to allow you to experience the wildlife of Mull without a car, by linking up with two small group wildlife tours - one on land and one at sea, plus a boat trip to the Treshnish Isles. There are two days at leisure to explore the island - we recommend you do this on foot or by local bus and we will provide recommendations for what to do and where to go.On our wildlife holidays, we carefully select our partners to ensure the highest standards in wildlife viewing and conservation. Established over thirty years ago, our whale-watching partner is the most experienced in the UK, and their trips have featured on many TV programmes, including BBC's Coast and recently Ray Mears' "Wild Britain" on ITV. There are always expert local guides onboard who continue to actively conduct a research programme focused on the minke whale, contributing directly to marine conservation. Through this survey, there is now much greater awareness and knowledge about the behaviour of cetaceans off the west coast of Scotland. Of course, it is illegal to hunt whales and sharks in the waters around Britain, which is sadly not the case in some other whalewatching destinations.
White-tailed eagles were reintroduced to the West of Scotland three or four decades ago, after serious persecution and trophy-hunting in Victorian times had decimated the once-thriving British population of these magnificent birds. They are now a frequent and impressive sight, soaring over the Isle of Mull. They are successfully breeding and re-establishing themselves in their natural habitat, and are no longer threatened here, as their economic value in bringing visitors to the island is greatly appreciated.
Otters are elusive and rare mammals, but the Isle of Mull has the highest density anywhere in the UK, so there are reasonable chances of spotting them at play or at rest, especially when accompanied by our knowledgeable guide.
