1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?
Dawn at Sossusvlei. Flying over the dunes the next day. The bleakness of the Skeleton Coast. Quadbiking on seas of sand. Driving across endless expanses of desert. The sky at daybreak - at sunst - at night. Encountering Giraffes, Elephants, Lions, Rhinos, Zebras and a host of other animals in their natural habitat. The genuine warmth of the staff and guides at the Lodges. All of it.
2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?
Take sufficient warm clothing when going on early morning safaris. Useful to always keep a water bottle near to hand as the air is very dry. One can exchange cash at Windhoek International Airport in safety and at correct rates.
3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?
In general, yes. All of the Lodges we stayed in appeared to take the protection of the harsh and isolated environments where they are located very seriously.
4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?
Stunning!

CARBON REDUCTIONAll of the lodges in this itinerary use solar power and Namib Outpost, Shipwreck Lodge, Hoanib Valley and Andersson's at Ongava run exclusively using solar power. Omaanda using 70% solar power and 30% from the grid.
There are a number of human-powered activities available throughout the trip. For example from Namib Outpost guided walking is a great way to discover the Sossusvlei region and the surrounding nature reserve. Horse-riding is also possible here, reducing the reliance on vehicles further. At Shipwreck Lodge, guided walks are available as well as sand boarding, walks are also possible at Hoanib Valley and Andersson's at Ongava.
ENVIRONMENT AND WILDLIFE
Andersson's at Ongava provides a notable example of restoring nature in and around their property. It is located within the 323 square kilometres Ongava Nature Reserve an area outside of any national park protected for wildlife and tourism from the lodges within the reserve help to continue its procection. Andersson's is also home t0 the Ongava Research Centre, an independent, privately funded institution attached to the lodge where scientists and researchers from around the world set out daily to explore, observe, analyse, and unravel the mysteries of the wild. Their findings, published online and in international journals, are helping to enhance our understanding of natural ecosystems, while forging stronger bonds between humanity and the environment.
Eco Awards Namibia is a collaboration between the private sector and government bodies, and grants awards upon inspection and certification for sustainable tourism. The promotion of the careful use of our resources is of great importance. To be granted Flowers by Eco Awards Namibia is a mark of distinction, and confirmation of efforts to preserve the world we live in. In both 2020 and 2023, Shipwreck Lodge received Five Green Flowers, which is above 90% across all areas of evaluation. This recognises the lodge's commitment to conservation, energy efficiency, water management and waste reduction as well as its aim to strive to minimise any ecological footprint and safeguard the environment and its inhabitants.

LOCAL ECONOMYHoanib Valley Camp is a unique partnership with the local Sesfontein Community and the Giraffe Conservation Foundation, the Hoanib Valley Camp focuses heavily on supporting its local community and the on going conservation of the area with a particular focus on its resident giraffe population.
With funds from guests to Namib Outpost and its sister property Desert Homestead the company behind these two lodges has created the surrounding Namib Tsaris Nature Reserve, covering 140,000ha. With a decline in the viability of the sheep farming in the area, the local community now benefits from the opportunities to work in tourism and on the new nature reserve.
EMPLOYMENT, INCLUSIVITY AND DIVERSITY
The Ongava Research Centre which is located at the lodge Andersson's at Ongava and provides state of the art facilities for Namibian scientists and visiting students to research animal habits and habitats, the impact of climate change, and the connection between humans and the natural environment. This provides the opportunity to be showcased on a global stage. For local researchers and students there is also accommodation available including six en-suite, self-contained student rooms, a large communal kitchen, laundry facilities and WiFi, meaning accessing Ongava Research Centre is open to a wider audience of Namibians.
