Northern Lights activity break in Finland, Arctic Hills
Description of Northern Lights activity break in Finland, Arctic Hills
December to April is without question the best time to visit Finnish Lapland. The landscapes are at their most pristinely beautiful, there is an enviable range of activities to try, from husky sledding across fields of snow to swimming in a frozen river, and of course during the spring you have an excellent chance of witnessing the Northern Lights, one of nature’s most spectacular events.
This unforgettable trip begins in the village of Inari, cultural heartland of the indigenous Sami people that herd reindeer in Finland’s most northerly reaches. As an introduction to the area and its cultural heritage you’ll visit the Siida Museum here, and take a look at the Sami parliament building.
Leaving Inari, the adventure begins as you head to a charming wilderness lodge amid the Arctic Hills, near the Urho Kekkonen National Park. This will be your idyllic base for the next few days as you indulge in pursuits such as cross country skiing (over 200km of tracks in the area, and perfectly suitable for beginners too), and snowmobiling. Each of the lodge’s riverside rooms has a private sauna so you can warm up, then if you have the nerve, try the traditional Finnish ice swim!
It’s difficult to pinpoint the highlights of a trip such as this, as every day will prove memorable. But you are sure to love the experience of driving a team of huskies, as they pull your sled through magical forest. Then there’s the night you’ll spend in an Aurora Lodge. If luck is on your side you’ll enjoy stunning views of the Northern lights dancing around millions of stars. (note: you may stay in the Aurora Lodge either on Day 2, or on your final night).
Do warn friends and family before departure as there’s a good chance you will never want to come home.

We enjoyed many high lights – the first being the opportunity to drive ourselves on a six husky dog lead sleigh through pristine evergreen snowy forest – the Siberian huskies were a wonderful experience – our guide was knowledgeable, passionate and thorough and leading an exciting husky dog experience – it was such an adventure! A sleigh ride led by reindeer into the forest at night to view the northern lights were spectacular – we were fortunate enough to see the northern lights dancing across the skies and Marvel at the immense hugeness and beauty of it all. We hope our guests will get to see with their own eyes how beautiful the Arctic and its nature is, gaining an understanding of the reasons behind why protecting this pristine environment is so important. We want our guests to learn to value silence. Many of us do not even understand how total silence feels as in cities it is never really silent. The snowmobile tour in Inari is part of certified activity services offered by a company that does have a Green Key certificate. As far as possible groups are preferred and group transportation is used to cut down on carbon emissions.
Both the hotels we use are run by the same local private family putting high emphasis on the nature around them. Nature is the most valuable asset of Lapland and the local companies are doing all they can to preserve it.
Food served in your hotel comes from the neighborhood. You will get a lot of fish and reindeer as well as local berries. During their time in Lapland, guests will enjoy a meal outside and learn how to prepare it using locally grown ingredients.
The local tour operator has both Biosphere and Sustainable Travel Finland certificates.

They will take a snowmobile trip to visit the holy Sámi sights by lake Inari. They will then be taken by a local driver from Inari to Saariselkä to a hotel next to the UKK National Park on the hills.
A whole network of local service providers are needed for making all this happen: two 100% local small hotels, a husky farm and a transportation company as well as the museum of Sámi culture..
