Responsible Travel

As the pioneers of responsible tourism, we've screened this (and every) holiday so that you can travel knowing we've worked to maximise the benefits of your holiday to local people and places, and minimise any negative impacts.

Planet

We are an awarded ecotourism company. We won the award as best tourism company in Sweden 2015, we won the Grand Travel Award for best ecotourism in Sweden 2009.

Here's why.

We want to show the our guests that Lapland's nature and culture is worth saving for future generations! The landscapes in Lapland is often perceived as wild and beautiful. Unfortunately these mountains, forest and rivers are under constant threat by exploration of mining, logging and construction of water dams.

While these forces are strong, we belive that small scale tourism is a great reason to preserve nature. It creates jobs for local communities with minimal impact on the environment. Responsible travelers in Lapland has become an important factor when it comes to save this fragile ecosystem. We are proud to say that our tours are often used as a good example by politicians and other authorities to prove that wild and beautiful nature is worth saving. So, by joining this tour you are part of this positive movement.

Wildlife watching is one of the main focuses during this tour. We want you to experience Lapland's wildlife such as Moose and Reindeer in their natural habitat. Yes, it privilige to see these animals in the wild. Yes, the're beautiful creatures. But we also want our guests to get the bigger picture. To understand that these animals are not to be taken for granted. And that they are not here for us. During this tour our guides are eager to explain how you can be part of the solution.

The lodges where we stay all have a policy to reduce, reuse and recycle whenever possible. How? Waste can be separated into various bins and recycled, and as a guest we expect you to separate accordingly. All of the guesthouses on this trip are run on 100 percent renewable erergy, and the chemicals for cleaning and washing are ecofriendly labelled. Jokkmokk guesthouse for example is at the forefront of working with environmental questions an often used as a good example.

If you are looking to reduce your carbon footprint we can highly recommend you to take the night train from Stockholm to reach our tour. Travel like an adventurer! We are happy to help you out. Our guide can meet you at the train station and we have adapted our starting and ending times if you choose to arrive by train.

• We respect wild animals by staying at respectful distance, never chase och deliberately disturb them
• We contribute to feeding and reporting winter birds at a local feeding station
• We travel in small groups for less impact on the local environment
• We encourage our guests to travel by train
• We reduce, reuse and recycle wherever possible
• All meals are based on locally produced ingredients and vegetarian is always an option
• We don’t use plastic plates, mugs or cutlery
• Our electric boat motors are charged on local hydro-power
• These electric boat motors minimise disturbance for wildlife and locals
• We provide equipment and camping gear to reduce consumption
• Refillable water bottles is encouraged

People

With us you're not a tourist. We avoid the touristy places. With us you're a fellow traveller who will experience the true and authentic Lapland. Pure nature is the main attraction here. For that you don't need an entrence ticket. You need a local guide.

Locals are not a nice little sideshow, but rather one of the highlights of this trip. You will meet locals at the guesthouses, at the eateries and at the handicraft shops. Perhaps even by a lake in the forest.

Meet Lennart, a good friend of ours. He's Sami. We are invited to stay in his really cool tented camp, Sami style. Meet Anna, mother in a lovely little reindeer herding family. Listen to her stories by the camp fire. Meet her reindeer too!

By joining this tour you will gain a good insight into Sami culture and history. We expect you to become a true Sami ambassador. Sami culture needs to be preserved and promote. These meetings will hopefully stay with you forever!

During this tour we stay and eat at locally owned guesthouses and lodges. The owners will welcome you, take care of you and be interested in who you are. Since they are often very interesting people we always make sure that there is a lot of time for them to share their life stories, to chat and to ask questions. They are already our friends. Soon they will be your friends too.

What kind of food will be served? Well, we know you don't come to Sweden to eat pizza, sushi or fried rise. You want local food. Reindeer, cloudberries, gahkku and more. We always ask for typical Lapland meals and meals inspired by the Sami kitchen, made on local produce whenever possible.

• All inclusive tours contribute greatly to the local economy
• Native Sámi people are part of this tour which helps preserve and promote Sámi culture
• We contribute to the conservation of the reindeer herding culture by helping feeding injured reindeer
• Local guides become ambassadors for nature and wildlife
• Local food and drinks contribute to the local community
• We are members of the local neighbourhood watch
• We grant Save the Forest Award each year to show respect and acknowledgment to young people who stand up for the biodiversity in Sweden’s wild and beautiful forests.
