1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?

The RIB Safari from Svolvær in the Lofoten Islands, where we saw sea eagles and orcas.

2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?

Unless the trip is modified, this trip involves a lot of travel days, so be prepared. While there were a few pre-planned group activities, research independent activities, as there is a lot of free time to follow your own interests. We found Get Your Guide and Viator to be useful resources to find additional excursions and activities at generally reasonable prices. There were a number of solo travelers in our group who were randomly assigned to room together. Be prepared for small rooms, as is typical in Europe; bring earplugs or noise canceling headphones.

3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?

We primarily reduced environmental impacts by using public transportation - buses and ferries. Otherwise, the local benefits would be primarily from our spending in local communities on food and lodging and other activities. I don’t think anything we did specifically supported conservation.

4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?

Overall, the holiday was nice. I thoroughly enjoyed exploring north of the Arctic Circle during the midnight sun. Our tour guide was inexperienced and not local; while he handled the logistics well, he wasn’t a true tour guide, educating us on local nature, culture, history, or whatever. The locations of three of our four hotels were fine, though one had rooms facing a noisy street. The fourth was about 1.5 k outside of town, so a lot of time was spent just walking back and forth to get to restaurants, included activities, and optional outings.

Responsible Travel

As the pioneers of responsible tourism, we've screened this (and every) holiday so that you can travel knowing we've worked to maximise the benefits of your holiday to local people and places, and minimise any negative impacts.

Planet

When travelling through Scandinavia we use public transport where possible, the most sustainable way of moving around. On this trip we take the train from Oslo to Trondheim and Trondheim to Bodo, we travel by local ferry to the Lofoten Islands, and by public bus to Tromso. Not only is this a very comfortable way of travelling, these journeys also follow very scenic routes and offer a great opportunities to strike up conversations with the local people.

All our leaders are passionate about responsible travel, so our messaging around the importance of environmental issues is always consistent. Our leaders make the effort to teach our passengers about recycling in Scandinavia, which is well ahead of the game in comparison to other European nations. We hope some of our passengers will take these ideas home with them to help improve the environment where they live.

We supply our customers with canvas bags to use throughout the trip and to encourage them to say no to plastic ones. We also suggest the use of refillable water bottles as tap water all over Scandinavia is drinkable.

On our trips we use locally owned and run businesses, such as hotels and restaurants. This way we are able to support the local Scandinavian economy instead of large international chains and corporations.

People

This trip is run entirely by our European Destination Management Company (or DMC) and they share our values when it comes to responsible travel. The trip is run by local leaders from the region, who are employed and paid in accordance with current industry standards. We also employ local guides where feasible, for instance on the Lofoten Islands where we embark on a guided morning kayaking excursion.

We make sure our small groups take nothing but photos and leave nothing but footprints. This small group tour has a maximum of 12 participants, meaning that we have a low impact on the communities we visit and are able to ensure that we don’t disrupt or contribute to the displacement of local people.

Our small groups also allows us to stay in family-run hotels and pensions that cannot benefit from coach tours and other mass tourism due to their limited size. We also support small restaurants and cafes.
