The founders led overland trips across the world in the 60s and 70s before creating this company in 1981. Today, it offers tours in 120 countries, but never lost that pioneering spirit of adventure.
Small group tour, ideal for solos & couples:
Small group travel is not large group travel scaled down. It is modelled on independent travel – but with the advantage of a group leader to take care of the itinerary, accommodation and tickets, and dealing with the language. It’s easy to tick off the big sights independently – but finding those one-off experiences, local festivals, travelling markets and secret viewpoints is almost impossible for someone without the insider knowledge gained from years in the field. Those with a two-week holiday, a small group tour will save valuable planning time.

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?

2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?

Take more cash as card payments while possible are not preferred by the restaurants for group meals and some simply say no to individual bills.

3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?

Yes - we used local guides restaurants coffee shops etc; No - flying and bus tours have an impact; Partly - conservation of the ancient sites is not linked to
visitor fees in many cases.

4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?

Great itinerary although more details would help as its graded "full on" but doesn't really have to be - more info day by day would mean more people would
make the choice to do it knowing which parts they would opt out of or take the alternative e.g. taxi to Palamidi Fortress and not the 850 steps! or coffee shop
and not the (rather pointless and difficult terrain) walk to the southern most point of mainland Europe.

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?

The day spent in Gythio and lunch at Pylos in a very nice fish restaurant.
All major archeological sites were truly memorable.

2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?

Tips to the travel company?
Make the visit to Athens as an add on and optional and thus cut number of hotel changes.
Guides to Epidaurus and Mycenas.
Ensure members are fit to travel and not expecting the individual care of either other fellow travellers or the group manager.

3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?

Difficult to say. We were a well travelled group, respecting paths and wild flowers and polite to natives.
We contributed to restaurants.

4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?

Interesting. Drivers employed and group manager very good.
Hotels could be reviewed to provide better quality and more space
The pickup and delivery from and to the airport reliable and much appreciated.

Responsible Travel

As the pioneers of responsible tourism, we've screened this (and every) holiday so that you can travel knowing we've worked to maximise the benefits of your holiday to local people and places, and minimise any negative impacts.

Planet

CARBON REDUCTION

Most of our hotels use renewable energy to heat hot water (solar panels). In 2023 57 % of all energy produced in Greece came from renewable energy sources (wind/solar/water).

As a travel company we're acutely aware of our impact on the environment. Each one of our tours displays a carbon footprint, and we're working to reduce our emissions by regularly reviewing our itineraries and embracing lower-impact styles of travel such as trains, public buses or walking – which aren't just better for the planet, but we believe offer a more enjoyable and authentic travel experience too. We're a Certified B Corp that's committed to creating unforgettable adventures while protecting our planet for future generations.

ENVIRONMENT & WILDLIFE

On this holiday the tour guide will tell you about the Pylos wetland and Gyalova Lagoon and explain its importance as the first stop for migratory birds travelling from Africa. Our ground agent supports Archelon.gr an agency who protect areas of the Peloponnese like the turtle nesting beach of Kuparissia Bay.

We strive to support nature and biodiversity through protection and regeneration projects, and for every customer that travels with us we make a donation to Rewilding Britain and Cool Earth.

We encourage customers to avoid single-use plastic on tour, and our leaders give advice on refill points each day. Where tap water isn't safe to drink we recommend Water-to-Go bottles, a filtration bottle allowing you to drink water from any source.

People

LOCAL ECONOMY

All accommodation we use on this trip is locally owned and in which you experience great food, much of which is sourced locally, and lovely wine. This not only provides direct employment within the hotel, but also has the effect of percolating money beyond to small businesses that supply the hotel and in this way money is spread throughout the region we visit. Our local Tour Leaders are trained by us in the importance of responsible tourism with guidance given on how they can make a difference. This trip uses the services of a number of different suppliers, from the numerous restaurateurs, boat owners, guides and drivers, and our visit provides significantly more employment than on a more conventional ‘package holiday’: we specify our preference for a smaller, more eco-friendly bus.

Our leaders are the heart of tours. They bring passion and unrivalled knowledge of the destinations and communities that we visit. Their guidance ensures we observe the cultural norms in a destination, they act as a bridge between travellers and the local community and ensure that tourism is a positive experience for both host and guest. We believe in supporting local; staying in locally-run hotels, exploring markets, buying snacks from street vendors, and by doing this we add money to the local economy and enhance our connection with the local community.

EMPLOYMENT, INCLUSIVITY & DIVERSITY

This trip is partly suitable for people with limited mobility, but they need to be accompanied by another person. Visits to all archaeological sites may not be possible this depends on the level of limited mobility. The trip is LGBTQ+ friendly

We estimate that 90 % of persons employed by our providers are locals. And even remaining 10 % are immigrants who has settled and living in Greece permanently. In Greece there is minimum wage legislation, and it is against the law to pay less, so we expect all our partners to pay at least the minimum wage. Due to lack of employees wages are usually higher than minimum.

We believe that diversity is to be celebrated and as a Certified B Corp we're committed to championing equity and inclusion throughout our entire supply chain. We believe that an inclusive approach is essential, and that the best results occur when contributors have different opinions, experiences and backgrounds to bring to the table.
