1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?

Day 2 drive on the Great Ocean Road and all sightings of koala bears.

2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?

To be aware that the Royal Mail hotel offered the most amazing location with the kangaroos in the grounds but at the same time it is a gourmet meal that took 3hours to serve., therefore the whole evening was devoted to eating. Also the wine price was an absolute ‘rip off’ at $52 for the smallest measure of 2 glasses of house red we have ever had. If we had not had company at the dinner then the time would have really dragged. The meal experience did not really fit the tour. The first night we had a very enjoyable good quality meal.

3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?

The locations visited had good services e.g. toilets , litter bins. The guide was a local man to Melbourne who ensured we understood the local area and its development. We think that the Royal Mail hotel is elitist and therefore probably not of benefit to the local people. Because of the fire in the Grampians, we took the option of visiting Bellarat a reconstructed gold mine. This was a local resource and clearly benefitted many local people.

4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?

Very enjoyable, excellent friendly helpful guide . Gave lots of insights into Australian lifestyle, social history. Slightly disappointed because Grampians closed but that could not be helped. My aim was to see koalas and that was achieved.

Responsible Travel

As the pioneers of responsible tourism, we've screened this (and every) holiday so that you can travel knowing we've worked to maximise the benefits of your holiday to local people and places, and minimise any negative impacts.

Planet

Our tours have a low impact on the environment due to our small group numbers and the vehicles we use. We run vehicles that suits the size of our group that we are showing around. These may be people movers and small diesel mini buses. We do not run large buses or old vehicles and therefore have a low carbon output per paying passenger.
We provide refillable water bottles and water for our clients so that they are not buying numerous bottles of water while with us. As well as saving on the cost of buying water our clients are not adding to the escalating landfill due to disposable water bottle consumption.
The accommodation that we use, Beacon Point ocean View Villas are set high on a hill overlooking the ocean at Skenes Creek. These spacious self contained villas blend perfectly into the forest environment. A testament to this is the amount of wallabies, koalas and native birds that can often be seen.
Our guests are encourage to try local wine whilst food is, as much is possible, sourced locally.

People

We explain and actively promote sustainable growth in the Great Ocean Road region. We have recently lent our support to the people of Apollo Bay to stop a golf course development that would have doubled the size of the town. This development would have severely hampered the utility services to the town let alone the impact of the construction traffic incurred during the building phase. The designated are in flood plain would have required 1 million cubic meters of landfill to raise it to a safe height. This equates to 20 trucks of landfill per day for 4 years.
For the last 12 years we have been using the same cafe' for breakfast. As a group we interact and share stories with the locals and the staff.
Accommodation and all dining venues that we use are all owned by families living in the region, the money stays in the community. We are trying to keep up with local news and share them with our guests, it's all about sharing, reflecting and learn from each other.
