Responsible Travel

As the pioneers of responsible tourism, we've screened this (and every) holiday so that you can travel knowing we've worked to maximise the benefits of your holiday to local people and places, and minimise any negative impacts.

Planet

Gorilla Trekking- You will go for gorilla trekking during this safari. Only 8 people are allowed to track each gorilla family. The small number of people tracking is to make sure these gentle apes are not stressed and left to be. You will also be allowed only one hour to be in the presence of the gorillas once you allocate them, again this is to reduce stress and any chance of them getting infectious diseases from humans since we share about 96% DNA

During this trip, you will stay at Virunga Lodge. The lodge is sensitive to local culture and aesthetics, connect to the local community and conservation projects and seek to use resources responsibly. They minimize the environmental impact of the lodge by using solar power when possible, harvest their own rain water and recycle water and waste water when possible.

In March 2017 the Dian Fossey Map Room was opened at the lodge. The Map Room pays tribute to the unique contribution of Dian Fossey and other conservationists, to mark the 50th anniversary of the Karisoke Center. An exhibition and catalogue, entitled ‘Explorers and Conservationists of the Virunga Volcanoes’ curated by Giulia Ajmone Marsan was formally launched.

People

On this tour you will visit Iby’Iwachu Cultural Village. Iby’lwacu cultural village gives tourists a rare chance to meet and interact with local people in their environment offering an experience of Rwandese culture and traditions. It is located near Volcanoes National park and it was started to showcase local and traditional activities, lifestyle and art craft among others. The village was started by the local people for the communities who benefit and earn directly from this great community based tourism initiative so as to improve their social economic wellbeing and as an incentive to conserve the mountain gorillas and their home

Iby’lwachu cultural village is a platform that displays the way of living, traditional dances and traditional lifestyles to tourists and community members by encouraging them to all be part of it while making money for the poor local people. The money got is used to support their household income based activities; encourages sustainability, reduces unemployment and empowers local people politically, economically and socially to reduce poverty which is the underlying cause of poaching while developing these entities as linkages towards conservation of the endangered mountain gorillas.
