Gorilla Trekking- You will go for gorilla trekking during this safari. Only 8 people are allowed to track each gorilla family. The small number of people tracking is to make sure these gentle apes are not stressed and left to be. You will also be allowed only one hour to be in the presence of the gorillas once you allocate them, again this is to reduce stress and any chance of them getting infectious diseases from humans since we share about 96% DNADuring this trip, you will stay at Virunga Lodge. The lodge is sensitive to local culture and aesthetics, connect to the local community and conservation projects and seek to use resources responsibly. They minimize the environmental impact of the lodge by using solar power when possible, harvest their own rain water and recycle water and waste water when possible.
In March 2017 the Dian Fossey Map Room was opened at the lodge. The Map Room pays tribute to the unique contribution of Dian Fossey and other conservationists, to mark the 50th anniversary of the Karisoke Center. An exhibition and catalogue, entitled ‘Explorers and Conservationists of the Virunga Volcanoes’ curated by Giulia Ajmone Marsan was formally launched.
