Description of Saudi Arabia cultural tour

Muslims have made pilgrimage here for centuries, yet the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia has only recently begun to open to outsiders. Discover it with an expert Saudi leader, visiting several World Heritage sites as we travel through desert, mountains and to the Red Sea. Along the way, we explore modern cities, stay in a village home, visit the largest camel market in the world, and explore Medina, Islam’s second holiest city. Visiting now, we see a country beginning to open to the world and undergoing a period of considerable change.

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?

The mix of places we visited and the super nice atmosphere within our group.

2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?

Don't worry that it will be too strict with clothes rules. Scarf was needed in or around mosques only.

3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?

I cannot say.

4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?

The booking procedure and contact with sales before our trip was very confused and tiring. But the trip itself was great!

Read the operator's response here:

We're delighted to hear that you had a great time in Saudi Arabia, Karin. In terms of sustainable and responsible travel in the country, our groups use locally owned hotels, restaurants, as well as eating locally produced food, wherever possible. We are sorry to hear that you didn't find the communication you received before the trip to be ideal - we will follow this up with our sales team to make sure our high standards are being upheld throughout the booking process.

Responsible Travel

As the pioneers of responsible tourism, we've screened this (and every) holiday so that you can travel knowing we've worked to maximise the benefits of your holiday to local people and places, and minimise any negative impacts.

Planet

How this trip helps protect and conserve local landscapes and nature.
• By travelling in a small group we ‘tread lightly’ to minimise our impact on local resources and the environment.
• We work with our partners on the ground to proactively reduce waste; this includes eliminating all single-use plastic water bottles by providing refills for re-usable bottles.
• The payment of entrance fees to natural reserves and archaeological sites generates income which is used for upkeep and development of these important sites. The trip takes in several UNESCO World Heritage Sites including the Nabatean ruins at Hegra, rock art at Jubbah, Al Ahsa oasis and Jeddah’s historic centre.
• We visit Ushaiger Heritage Village, one of the oldest settlements in the region which boasts some stunning traditional Najdi architecture.
• We rewild 100 square metres per passenger to compensate for all trip and flight emissions.
•

People

How this trip helps improve life for local communities.
• Local guides keep you well informed about local traditions and cultural-social sensitivities.
• This trip brings income and opportunity to the destination community through the inclusion of locally owned hotels, restaurants, and other enterprises, and by championing locally produced food wherever possible.
• In Buraydah we visit the Women’s Souq, and the Al Jerredah Souq, which specialise in art and crafts.
• In Taif we visit a rose factory where the local people gather roses to make one of the best rose perfumes in the world.
