Self-guided cycling Bosnia, Montenegro & Albania
Description of Self-guided cycling Bosnia, Montenegro & Albania
Whether you take this self guided Balkans cycling tour on a road bike, a touring bike, or an e-bike, you will be thrilled by the stunning natural landscapes on display as you travel through Montenegro, Albania and Bosnia and Herzegovina. This is a self guided and tailor made holiday, so you can adapt the itinerary according to your interests and abilities, but it is fully supported with comprehensive maps and route notes.
Beginning in Dubrovnik, Croatia (you could easily spend a day or two here beforehand), an optional transfer takes you across the border to the historic city of Trebinje in Bosnia and Herzegovina. Collect your hire bike (various types available, all at a supplement) and set off on a beautiful, downhill ride to Herceg Novi in Montenegro, on the shore of the Adriatic Sea. From here, the route hugs the coastline to the beautiful Bay of Kotor, before crossing the border into Albania.
Reaching Shkodra, you’ll have the option of dining at a well-known restaurant that prioritises ‘slow food’ – with local, seasonal ingredients as standard. Then, crossing back into Montenegro, the route takes you above Lake Skadar. This is the most challenging ascent of the week-long trip, but the panoramic views of the lake, and the Albanian Alps in the background, make it worth the effort. You’ll finish with another lovely downhill into Kotor and, if required, transfers further on can be arranged.
The roads, while sometimes busy, are idyllic terrain for cyclists. And from the small hotels and guesthouses used to the restaurants you can eat in every evening, there are many chances to learn about traditional Balkan culture. Remember that if you would like a little more challenge, or prefer a flatter route, the trip is very customisable, as you are being advised by people who know the region well.

Loved the variety of scenery and historical places,. The tour operator was excellent, went out of their way to help you before and after the trip. The accommodation was all great with good breakfasts in most to get you going. Because of the heat we started earlier than on the programe which worked well. Most of our tours include the five National parks of Montenegro. Each of them features unique environments and rich ecological values, which require corresponding attitude from visitors. Lake Skadar, the biggest lake at the Balkan peninsula features a very rich bird fauna. In our multi-activity and family tours we offer bird watching with kayaks. These tours are guided by bird protection activists, who are supported by our programms. We avoid using off-road jeep transfers, since some areas do have a very fragile soil surface. Anyhow we believe in the first line that our feet can take us everywhere. In order to avoid empty transfer kilometers we cooperate with transport providers, who are closest to a starting or pick up point of our tours. We include public transport in our tours where applicable. Eg. transfer by train form the coastline to the north of Montenegro saves 115km on the road.
In general we use almost no printed marketing material. To present our company and products we use tablets. The design works for our website is done by local creatives.
We encourage our guests to use re-fillable waterbottles, since tab water is drinkable in Montenegro, Bosnia & Albania.
People
We include as many local people as possible on our tours and we hope to build a bridge between visitors and locals and create better understanding for all day life challenges in Montenegro. Even though there is most of the time a huge language barrier, both sides enjoy the direct interactionWe highly value the knowledge and work of our business partners, who we consider as friends. Our local guides are usually recruited from the Northern parts of Montenegro, since this part of the country provides little opportunities for employment.
Food & produce: an integral part of real understanding and enjoyment of a region or country is eating the local food.
This ensures that the local producers see how valuable their produce is, in terms of keeping farming traditions alive, which on one side ensures a maintained landscape, and on the other side the base for rural tourism. We encourage our guests to buy local produce for souvenirs eg. home made Rakija (spirit), honey products, artisan wines, olive oil products, etc.
We cooperate with farmer communities, and we take our guests to visit them where possible which is a special experience. In return for the interest in their lifestyle, the generated additional income contributes to sustaining the livelihoods of the farmers, allowing people to stay up in the mountains producing traditional dairy products and maintaining the landscape.
