Responsible Travel
As the pioneers of responsible tourism, we've screened this (and every) holiday so that you can travel knowing we've worked to maximise the benefits of your holiday to local people and places, and minimise any negative impacts.
Planet
CARBON REDUCTIONEfforts cannot be made to reduce flying to Tanzania, but some airlines are using new techniques to reduce the environmental impact of flying. Volunteers are encouraged to use bikes for shorter distances in the area or district where they volunteer, promoting eco-friendly transportation.
The accommodation uses solar energy for electricity and heating water. Waste is minimized or taken to special collection points. Vegetables are mostly sourced from their own grounds and picked by hand. For other provisions, we source beef from local markets and fish from local fishermen on Lake Victoria.
Shared local transport options like buses and shared taxis are part of the trip, effectively reducing CO2 emissions per person.
ENVIRONMENT AND WILDLIFE
Volunteers play a vital role in promoting environmental awareness and conservation education. They teach students about local wildlife, ecosystems, and sustainable practices, fostering a sense of responsibility towards nature.
Accommodations on the trip often engage in practices to reduce their environmental impact, such as pollution reduction, rainwater harvesting, recycling programs, and minimizing plastic use. Some accommodations also actively restore nature around their property by collecting waste. The trip may include entry fees to parks or protected areas, contributing to the conservation of these regions.
People
LOCAL ECONOMYWe believe travel must benefit local communities. Locally Owned Accommodations: The accommodation on this trip is locally owned, allowing visitors to experience authentic Tanzanian hospitality and culture. Maximizing Local Economic Opportunities: We employ local guides, visit craft and cooperative markets, and include village visits. For instance, we partner with local artisans in Mwanza and cooperative markets in our district, supporting their crafts and boosting the local economy.
EMPLOYMENT, INCLUSIVITY AND DIVERSITY
Local Employment: 100% of the people employed by us or our operating partners in Tanzania are from the country, with a significant portion from the local community. This ensures that the economic benefits of tourism are widely distributed.
Inclusive Employment Opportunities: We create income-generating opportunities for marginalized groups, including women, indigenous people, and those with disabilities. For example, we collaborate with womens cooperatives in rural areas, providing them with sustainable income sources and renovating government schools in our district.
Fair Wages: All staff employed by us and our ground operating partners are paid at least the minimum wage, ensuring fair compensation for their work. Additionally, we cover health expenses for staff and their families if needed.
Workplace Diversity Strategy: We have a diversity strategy in place to ensure equal employment opportunities without regard to race, gender, sexual orientation, or nationality, promoting an inclusive work environment.
LGBTQ+ Friendly: This trip is LGBTQ+ friendly, ensuring a welcoming and safe environment for all travelers. However, we inform travelers about the legal context and cultural sensitivities, as being gay in Tanzania is illegal.
Suitability for People with Limited Mobility: The trip is not well suited for people with limited mobility, vision or hearing impairments, and cognitive issues. We provide advice and assistance as needed to accommodate diverse needs.
