Travelling in Armenia with kids

Your kids may not moon over monasteries, but from fun lake resorts to puppet theatres and the world’s longest cable car, there’s a lot to fire young imaginations in Armenia.![]()

Armenia is probably not going to top many lists of destinations for a family holiday. But that doesn’t mean there’s nothing here for kids of all ages to enjoy, far from it in fact. Yerevan in particular has the feel of a modern, lively capital city, and all the amenities you would therefore expect from family friendly restaurants to a broad selection of activities. Both Lake Sevan and Jermuk meanwhile are hugely popular holiday resorts for Armenian families, and of course there are plenty of easy hiking routes around suitable for little legs.
Activities for families in Armenia
Yerevan family attractions include the Cascade, a gigantic limestone staircase lined with sculptures and fountains. At the top of the Cascade is Victory Park, a large wooded area where amusements range from a Ferris wheel to a boating lake and more cafes. Yerevan also has a charming puppet theatre where you can sometimes catch a performance.
Just an hour east of Yerevan, Lake Sevan is the second highest mountain lake in the world, and a refreshing place to spend a few days in warmer weather. Beyond swimming, there are boat trips, sailing trips, jet skiing and windsurfing. There are also playgrounds to entertain younger children and of course these are the only beaches in Armenia. Fans of barbecued fish will be in foodie heaven.
For older kids, there is the appeal of crossing vast gorges either by the Wings of Tatev cable car, or the swinging bridge of Khndzoresk – both sure to prove very exciting. You could also splash out on a memorable hot air ballooning trip if you really want to help their imaginations take flight.

Tips for family holidays in Armenia
Natalie Fordham, from our partner Wild Frontiers, offers advice for travelling in Armenia with kids:
“Armenia isn’t the most obvious family holiday destination, but we do often get people wanting to visit and take their kids along, and there is plenty for them to do. You’ve got hiking of course, and the Wings of Tatev is fun too. Yerevan is a really cool and lively city, and you can take a daytrip to go zip lining, which not many people know about. Lake Sevan is a popular beach resort where you can hire bikes, take a boat trip or enjoy some well-deserved R&R.”
