Description of Trieste to Pula cycling tour, self guided

This tailor made Trieste to Pula cycling tour, self guided, takes you from Italy, through Slovenia and into Croatia to explore the Istrian Peninsula. Cycle to pretty towns and along beautiful coastline, soaking up the culture and history of this unspoiled area. You’ll discover Trieste and Pula, both important ports during the Austro-Hungarian empire. Visit Porec and Rovinj, which were vibrant trading centres at the height of the Roman Empire, while in the interior of Istria, visit Motovun and Grožnjan, two beautiful medieval fortified towns, perched high on hills. In between these interesting towns you’ll see the vineyards and olive groves that inform the culinary traditions of this region. Here, truffles are just one of the typical specialities you can tuck into after a day in the saddle.

This eight day adventure begins with cycling along the Parenzana Route, once a narrow-gauge railway which ambled its way down from Trieste, into the interior of Istria and back to the coast at Porec. It connected 33 Istrian towns and cities and crossed three country boundaries. This is a self guided tour, with flexible cycling each day. Shorter and longer routes are available of typically around 35km or 55km and E-bikes are also available to rent.

Thanks for our excellent tour experience. The bikes and accommodation were great, and I'd like to make special mention of Srecko Jurisic who was so helpful and friendly to us - that really makes a difference when we come from the other side of the world. Read full review

We loved Porec and Rovinj, but we were thrilled by everywhere we visited in Istria. From hilltop towns to the coast it is a gorgeous part of the world and no better way to experience it all than from the saddle of an e-bike! The people were welcoming and there were always places to stop for a coffee. The routes were well designed and kept us away from the traffic for the most part. So much history and so many beautiful spots. Highlight, since you ask was probably our dip in the Adriatic at Porec. What clear water! Read full review

Responsible Travel

As the pioneers of responsible tourism, we've screened this (and every) holiday so that you can travel knowing we've worked to maximise the benefits of your holiday to local people and places, and minimise any negative impacts.

Planet

Tourism is the world's fastest growing industry. Traveling to far flung places gives us a wonderful opportunity to experience cultures that are so different from our own. But with the wondrous joy of travel comes the responsibility of ensuring that we do not adversely affect those countries that we visit. In a nutshell, Responsible Travel is about ensuring that you, as travelers, and we, as a promoter of travel:

-respect the local culture
-do not inadvertently introduce new social ills and
-promote & practice environmental responsibility in the places that we visit.

That way, you enjoy a unique and memorable experience as well as authentic cross-cultural exchange and our local resources, cultures and customs are protected.

Our environmental policy:
We recycle all our waste paper.
Our correspondence and promotion is carried out via the internet and email, minimizing the amount of paper used for our activities.
We use established, locally-owned and run accommodation wherever possible and aim to leave sites in better condition than we find them.
Our vehicle fleet is managed to minimise environmental impact.
Our group sizes are small, helping minimise cultural and environmental impact.
We monitor our impact, and where necessary alter our programmes accordingly.
We always abide by site-specific guidelines pertaining to flora and fauna.

In this tour our customers will get to know whole Istrian peninsula. They will ride a bike from the medieval towns of Grožnjan and Buzet in countryside of Istria till coastline towns such as Pula, Rovinj and Porec. Cyclist will overnight in small family hotels such as „Casa Romantica Parenzana“ which is located on the “Parenzana” an old disused Austro Hungarian railway line which once connected Trieste with Porec. In Pula they will be in hotel called "Amfiteatar " just next to magnificent Roman amphiteater from 3th century. All the hotels on the route are bike friendly hotels. This way we are supporting our cultural sights.

People

We also involve local communities in remote areas that we travel to.
Our accommodation is mostly provided in small hotels, guest houses or apartments. On all our tours we use local produce and provide local-style meals, and we encourage our guests to try local dishes and delicacies. Most of the hotels such as "Casa Parenzana" in Buje or "Vela Vrata" in Buzet have excellent restourants where they serve traditional Istrian food such as truffles or "maneštra".
We support local economy and small business by supporting locally owned shops, restaurants, and using local guide services. Using local employees, accommodation providers, local restaurants and transportation services, we ensures that financial benefits remain in the local community. On this tour we label for them in self guided books many small family run restourants so called "konoba" where they can try dishes made from truffles or enjoy in best Istrian wines such as Tomaz, Arman, Benvenuti or Kabola in wine cellars that are also labeled .
