Responsible Travel

As the pioneers of responsible tourism, we've screened this (and every) holiday so that you can travel knowing we've worked to maximise the benefits of your holiday to local people and places, and minimise any negative impacts.

Planet

Reduce Flying
This holiday includes no domestic flights. All travel within Tunisia is by road, using a shared minibus and, on one day, 4x4 vehicles to access mountain oases. Avoiding internal flights reduces the overall carbon footprint while still covering the varied landscapes of the country.

Shared Local Transport
A shared A/C minibus is used for all major transfers and sightseeing throughout the nine-day itinerary. Travelling together in one vehicle significantly lowers emissions per person compared with individual cars.

Human Powered Transport
Walking plays a key role in the itinerary. The medinas of Tunis, Kairouan and Sfax are explored on foot, while Day 4 features hiking in the mountain oases of Chebika, Tamerza and Midès. These activities reduce reliance on vehicles and create a more immersive connection with the destinations.

Local And Seasonal Food
Meals are rooted in Tunisian cuisine and use local produce. A highlight is the cooking class in Tunis, which begins with shopping for fresh, seasonal ingredients in a market before preparing a traditional dish in a family home. The emphasis on Tunisian food traditions ensures support for local farmers and food producers.

ENVIRONMENT AND WILDLIFE

Protected Areas
Entrance fees are included for UNESCO World Heritage sites such as the Medina of Tunis, the Great Mosque of Kairouan, and the Roman Amphitheatre of El Jem. These contributions support the conservation and upkeep of globally significant cultural landmarks. Natural areas also feature in the itinerary, including the Chott el-Jerid salt lake and the mountain oases, where tourism raises awareness of fragile environments.

Biodiversity Practices
This tour highlights community-led practices that protect biodiversity. In Tozeur, for example, travellers learn about ancient irrigation systems that sustain extensive date palm groves. These methods conserve water resources in desert conditions and safeguard local ecosystems.

Nature Awareness
Information is shared through direct experiences. Visiting the troglodyte houses of Matmata demonstrates how homes were adapted to desert climates without overuse of resources, while the oasis of Tozeur shows sustainable water management in action. These encounters encourage reflection on sustainable living and the importance of conservation.

People

Locally Owned Accommodation
Accommodation is provided in Tunisian hotels in Tunis, Tozeur, Douz and Sfax. These are local properties rather than international chain resorts, meaning tourism income remains within the national economy.

Local Economic Opportunities
The itinerary includes visits to traditional markets in Tunis, Kairouan and Douz, where local artisans and traders benefit directly. A cooking class led by a Tunisian chef provides another source of local income, and sightseeing is guided by locally based experts. Visits to Berber communities in Matmata also create economic opportunities in rural areas.

Local Employment
All guides, drivers and instructors involved in the tour are locally based. Employment is therefore provided directly to people living in Tunisia, ensuring that the trip supports the national workforce.

Income For Marginalized Communities
Income opportunities are created in Berber villages such as Matmata, where families welcome visitors into their troglodyte homes. By including these communities in the itinerary, the tour helps sustain traditional practices and provides additional income for groups that may otherwise be excluded from mainstream tourism.
