PLANETCARBON REDUCTION
Reduction in avoidable internal flights
This tour avoids all internal flights. All travel across Tunisia, from Tunis to Sousse, Matmata, Douz, Tozeur, and Gammarth, is completed by shared, air-conditioned vehicles. This approach significantly reduces emissions by eliminating unnecessary domestic air travel.
Shared local transport
All transport throughout the tour is shared within a small group of up to twelve travellers, using one vehicle for transfers and excursions. This group-based travel model effectively reduces per-person carbon emissions while ensuring an efficient journey through Tunisia’s varied regions.
Human-powered transport
Walking forms a key part of the itinerary. Travellers take guided walking tours through the Medinas of Tunis, Sousse, and Kairouan, explore ancient sites such as Carthage and El Jem on foot, and enjoy guided walks through the mountain oases and canyon of Mides. These low-impact activities allow travellers to experience Tunisia’s culture and nature in an environmentally conscious way.
Local-sourced and seasonal food
The itinerary showcases Tunisia’s seasonal produce and traditional cuisine. Travellers take part in a Tunisian cooking class after selecting local ingredients at the Central Market and join a Harissa-making workshop using locally grown chillies and spices. Meals at the Women of GDA El Ferch cooperative and in local hotels further highlight the use of regional ingredients and support sustainable food traditions.
ENVIRONMENT AND WILDLIFE
Accommodation environmental impact reduction
All accommodation on the tour is locally owned and uses existing hotels and infrastructure, avoiding the environmental impact of new developments. The itinerary includes traditional accommodations such as the Berber-style hotel in Tataouine and desert lodgings designed to blend with their surroundings.
Entry fees to parks or protected areas
The tour includes entrance fees to several UNESCO World Heritage and protected cultural sites such as the Medinas of Tunis, Sousse, and Kairouan, the Amphitheatre of El Jem, and the archaeological remains of Carthage. These fees help support heritage conservation and site maintenance.
Contribution to nature recovery or rewilding projects
The guided exploration of mountain oases such as Chebika, Tamerza, and Mides introduces travellers to Tunisia’s unique desert ecosystems and oasis conservation practices. Local guides share knowledge about sustainable water use and the delicate balance between human and natural life in the region.
Expert nature guides
All tours are led by experienced local Tunisian guides. In the desert and mountain areas, they provide detailed interpretation of the environment and traditional ways of living sustainably in the Sahara and oasis regions.
People
PEOPLELOCAL ECONOMY
Locally owned accommodation
All accommodation used on this tour, including city hotels, traditional rural lodgings, and desert accommodations, is locally owned or managed. This ensures that tourism income remains within Tunisia and benefits local communities directly.
Local economic opportunities
This tour ensures travellers directly support Tunisia’s local communities and traditions. In Tunis, guests explore the Medina’s family-run workshops and markets, meeting artisans who craft ceramics, leather goods, and textiles.
A hands-on cooking class includes a visit to the Central Market, where travellers buy ingredients from local farmers and spice sellers before preparing a meal in a traditional home.
Further south, the Harissa-making workshop in Nabeul and visits to regional souks in Douz and Tozeur support small producers and craft vendors. A highlight is meeting the Women of GDA El Ferch cooperative, where rural women share their food-making traditions and earn fair income through sustainable agriculture.
This tour helps preserve Tunisia’s living heritage by encouraging authentic, respectful cultural exchange between travellers and local communities. Through hands-on workshops, market visits, and shared meals, traditional crafts and culinary techniques are celebrated and passed on to new generations.
Engagement with cooperatives and artisans supports the continuation of ancestral skills, while ensuring that local knowledge, language, and customs remain valued and visible within a modern tourism context. These meaningful interactions promote pride in cultural identity and strengthen community ties across Tunisia’s diverse regions.
EMPLOYMENT, INCLUSIVITY AND DIVERSITY
Local employment
All guides, drivers, and workshop hosts are Tunisian, with many originating from the regions visited. This ensures that employment opportunities are created locally and that travellers gain authentic insights into Tunisian life and culture.
Opportunities for marginalised groups
The Women of GDA El Ferch cooperative visit provides meaningful support to rural women engaged in sustainable agriculture and traditional food production. This initiative promotes women’s empowerment, preserves cultural skills, and generates local income.
Fair wages
All staff receive at least the legal minimum wage in Tunisia and are treated fairly in accordance with national labour standards.
