Walk The West Highland Way, self-guided
Description of Walk The West Highland Way, self-guided
The West Highland Way is a long distance national trail that runs from Milngavie, a suburb of Glasgow, to Fort William in the highlands, over a distance of 154km. On this self guided walking holiday you can complete the whole of the trail in nine days, walking south to north and staying in good quality locally run hotels, guesthouses and a hostel along the way.
Highlights on the route include walking along the eastern shores of Loch Lomond, the UK’s largest stretch of inland water, and the journey between Kingshouse and Kinlochleven, past Glen Coe and up the ‘Devil’s Staircase’ to the highest elevation on the route (550m). Every day has plenty of spectacular scenery, plus the possibility of spotting an osprey.
This route is suited to experienced walkers. You’ll walk between 15km and 23km per day over nine consecutive days of hiking. You’ll need to be comfortable with long distances over several days, prepared for adverse weather and hiking in good and broken-in walking boots. There is an option to add a rest day in the seaside town of Oban midway through, should you want to extend your time in the Highlands, and you might be able to enjoy catch of the day for dinner.
This trip includes daily breakfasts and luggage transfers. You’ll navigate using GPX route maps and a mobile app – so you can easily see your progress on one of the UK’s most beloved walking routes.

The second Loch Lomond hike was most memorable to us. The lake scenery was very beautiful, and it was the most challenging hike during our whole trip... We were very pleased with the trip and would give high marks. Read full reviewReviewed on 14 May 2025 by Robin Warren

As a responsible tour operator, we pride ourselves on only working with local, independent partners who share in our passion to positively impact our local communities and environment. This long-distance walking trail crosses through varied terrain and some areas that have populations of wild roe and red deer. We encourage you to ‘leave no trace’ as you complete the trail and provide tips on how to get the most out of your experience whilst respecting the natural environment to its fullest.
Through offering this trip as a self-guided experience, rather than a group trip means that the number of walkers we send on the trail at one time is reduced causing less impact to the environment. As the trail is one of the more popular in Scotland it is important to us to encourage travel outside of the busiest season.
We also supply you with a reusable water bottle to take with you to help curb single-use plastic pollution.

Along The West Highland Way trail there are many accommodation options. We have selected smaller locally owned guesthouses and B&Bs to give you a true Scottish experience. This not only supports the local economy and local businesses but also gives you an authentic insight and a chance to get to know the communities you are visiting in this wonderful part of the Scottish Highlands.Self-guided trips like this have a lower impact than large groups visiting a destination, ensuring a more positive and sustainable impact on the local community.
We always encourage guests to support local businesses by visiting the local pubs and using village shops for any supplies needed. These rural businesses rely on regular trade to keep them open, so please do support them by buying local whenever you can.
